The Cat Files : Ascot 3rd November - Niblick

West Australian Racing

edited November 2012 West Australian Racing

Niblick, while only having two runs in WA since purchased from the powerful Lloyd Williams stable, has yet to prove he can compete anywhere near the top level in the West. He imploded again yesterday, over racing badly to finish towards the end of an ordinarly Asian Beau field.

This on the back of a career best run at his second last start for Williams in September last year, easily accounting for Rockpecker in a listed race at Flemington worth $126k. He looks a shadow of that horse on his two runs in Perth.

he over raced when fairly handy last time, so i have no idea why they decided to get way back there and pull while they were getting it easy up front.
i would be disinclined to write him off just yet, as he had none from almost the moment they jumped yesterday.
i thought it a reasonable run in the circumstances

Geez, i hate to say it, but i am giving him one more chance..He got the start better yesterday but just over-raced in the middle stages. Hopefully with a bit of confidence he will either settle or get a smaller field where he can go forward if need be.... He certainly finished off well yesterday.

And he has to run 2nd and 3rd's to get in the cat file doesn't he????? ;)

Career change forces Niblick to head east

Career change forces Niblick to head east

NSW country trainer Brett Cavanough will prepare WA-owned sprinter Niblick for his maiden assault on Sydney autumn racing.

Perth businessman Emile Panossian bought Niblick for $200,000 at a dispersal sale of Melbourne Cup-winning owner Lloyd Williams in Melbourne last year.

Niblick had won the Listed Sofitel Stakes (1400m) and was third to Viking Hero in the Group 3 Eclipse Stakes (1800m) for trainer Robert Hickmott.

Niblick raced at the top level in his five Ascot starts for trainer Trevor Andrews, with his best effort being second to Maschino in the RJ Peters Stakes (1500m), qualifying the gelding for the Railway Stakes (1600m), where he ran 10th to Mr Moet last November.

Panossian believes firm Ascot surfaces did not suit his horse.

Niblick has raced primarily in Victoria and South Australia.

"The tracks are too firm here for him," Panossian said.

"Also there was the problem of him pulling too hard in his races and I don't think myself that he handled the tighter Ascot circuit."

WTF would you buy a high class wet tracker for Perth racing? Bizarre.

???? What a brain fade didnt the owner no we dont get much rain in Perth at summer time :)) :))
    More $$$ than brains !!!!
The horse pulls to hard i dont think the tracks have anything to do with that he was a 3 rater in Melbourne

having a look at the prices being paid at the MM sales i'd say a lot have more $$$s than brains.
i wonder what % of those sold will even make it to the track??

Only 2% of all racehorses born will win more than 2 city wins, if you get the time research any old catalogues you like and you will find out it is a very risky to buy yearlings from horse sales
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,495 posts
i'd say "risky" is not the word for it... =((

That's a bit rude calling Emile a fool.
He runs a very successful business and puts a lot of money into racing.
It's a shame the horse didn't perform but he would be aware of the risks.
  • SPUDLEYSPUDLEY    1,584 posts
Sorry but I do not know him all I said was it is very risky buying yearlings and even riskier buying a ex- Lloyd Williams horse or a ex- Bob Peters one as they have tried EVERYTHING to see if a horse can be any good.

True hope it wins some races for him personally for what it is worth would be sending the horse to Robert Heathcote in Brisbane he has had success with a few of these types before plenty of races there for him.

The ex Bob Peters horse Talent Show went alright in the Perth Cup.
Look it's all a risk, and good luck to anybody who buys a horse and at least have a go.
It is always easier to sit on the sidelines and whinge, criticize and be negative.

Spudley they have both sold plenty of winners but they do seem expensive but most winners are one way or another.
  • SPUDLEYSPUDLEY    1,584 posts
I do not sit on the sidelines I breed my own and race my own, and all I am doing is stating facts.
  • SPUDLEYSPUDLEY    1,584 posts
Hey Goose what percentage of Peters and Williams sold at sales do any good , you do the research and get back as I think it will not be high.
  • goosegoose    1,638 posts
Wouldnt know but reckon it would be higher than breeding your own but am only guessing to breed and race your own it costs $20-$30000 to get them to the track so can see the advantage of buying one up and running.
There is Williams cast off's winning regularly in QLD Hume is one I have backed good stayer.

bleeder. I know of a number of people who have suffered the same fate. Still, you learn that lesson just once.
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,495 posts
