D Mac at his best yesterday calling Ruling Force winning until it was past the post... Then Terror Force became the winner! Glad I was watching the race and was on Terror Force not listening and on Ruling Force! Richie Bell for me anyday.

I mentioned this in the Ascot preview. I was on bloody Ruling Force and started to pat myself on the back. Was spewing when he quickly chnaged the name after they had gone past the post. Terrible as I listen to the radio - I live in Kalbarri and can't be arsed going to the pub to watch. Last week my horse got mentioned at the top of the straight and that was it. Didn't get another mention even when going through the finishing order. Last we heard was 'is making her run' and thinking here we go. She ended up finishing 8th but we were none the wiser.
On a brighter note I backed the last three winners at Ascot yesterday so came out well ahead.

Have said it before and will say it again, he is the worst in the business. How he has the job is one of lifes great mysteries.

Side question - how come they changed callers mid meeting Saturday ?
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,486 posts
when you are calling as many races per week as he does you have to make the occasional mistake.
the prime callers in the east do not call as many races /week as ours does.
    give the guy a break.

I would be ok if it was occasional Falc... But it is a bit more than occasional!

I've listened to a few races with the sound down lately . . . it actually is quite absorbing after a few races, you really concentrate on scanning the field/chances yourself - attunes the sense you have available to you.

    Go on, try it

Did he call "cobble lane" copper reign in the last even though it was a late scratching certainly sounded like it !!
  • PunterKJPunterKJ    26 posts
That is very clever "listening" with the sound down darkshines... Haha I see your point though! I am more concerned with the poor punter that doesn't have access to the vision and is listening on the radio! I feel you pain HotJules... On another note Terror Force was a big firmer in Karrakatta markets!

And if a doctor, cop, lawyer or garbo made the same number of blues this bloke does they'd soon find themselves unemployed... regardless of percieved workload. He is simply no good.

He would do a better job reading the news than Trevor Jenkins with the sport on the ABC....Trev still hasn't got the smile timing right.

Does D Mac have a contract with the TAB/Government and sub contract all the race callers as his team of employees?

Falc it is a racing forum mate for people to comment if the jobs to hard go get another one he calls the same amount as the bloke in SA Hilton Donaldson 3-4 meetings per week same as most i understand we all make mistakes in our workplace DM seems to do them on a weekly basis

I think there are bigger issues in racing? I don't mind Darren, if he calls your horse incorrectly, put it down to a first world problem :((

Richie Bell is a terrible caller his voice is so draining
I almost fall to sleep listening to him call races.

D mac on the other hand can make the odd blue but
Atleast you can actually sit and listen to a race and not
Have to get lost in his voice... He knows his form also.

Disagree ,Richie rocks nothing uphimself about him at all doesnt think he is a rock star like the other bloke

I honestly can't believe that anyone doesn't know what they have backed when watching a race, I know exactly what I have backed and where it's running. I watched a race in the bookies ring on Sat, standing beside the biggest bookie in WA and an ex bookie (now Punter) and was amazed at the comments they were making during the race,it was if they have were at their 1st ever race meeting, quite comical some of the things they were saying :)

Macca is the best we have had by a long way since Stewie Shenton, might make a few blues but overall calls great. When you have to listen to Hilton D in SA, it makes you realize how lucky we are

I am no Richie advocate at all but I simply can't buy the argument about voices. I don't give a rats if they use one boring drab tone, scream, whisper or sing - just do the job properly.
  • PunterKJPunterKJ    26 posts
PB my argument all along was for the punter that is listening to the race unable to watch! A bit hard to watch your horse while listening... If macca is our best by a long way then you are having a real crack at the rest of our race callers. Thanks for the input anyway

I agree he's a good caller BUT he dead set needs to work out how long a horse is FFS. On Wednesday he called Assets N Cash "15 lengths off the leader" at around the 500 - 600m. If it was 16 lengths then I need a new pair of specs.
His calls are very good and accurate EXCEPT in this area. If someone is listening in and they hear that their nag is 16 lengths off the lead they will near-on vomit, where in reality it was about half that distance from the lead.

If anyone can be bothered checking it out I'd be glad to be corrected.

Whether it be the harness or the thoroughbreds, Richies's ability to get a photo finish call correct is not matched by many racecallers anywhere . Only the Hong Kong boys are as good in my eyes....

I reckon the guy who calls Sydney racing on Saturday on Sky is very good in the photo finish. Rarely gets one wrong and isn't shy to have a go at the result.
