I was just looking at the fields for Yalgoo on Saturday and I see the topweight in the 4 horse $7,000 Yalgoo Cup is ............... cue drumroll..................Guest Wing.
Have we ever seen a bigger fall from grace than a Perth Cup winner running around at a bush meeting.
I would have thought that if you (rightly or wrongly) won your connections a Perth Cup, that you would be entitled to a life of luxury in a lush paddock somewhere once your zest or ability for racing waned.

    Can anybody get onto Trevor Jenkins, at the ABC news sport desk, and get him to show some intrest in horse racing in WA. Trevor was the best race caller in WA in his time, and we need to get Racing back on the TV.

    but yes, bc4e, it is a shame seeing it at yalgoo after a stint down south in the cups..you cannot blame the present owners though. imo piper and co. should have given him away as a hack.

    Still says Piper owns him (in the racebook) (but not racing in Piper colours)

    Horse should be in a green paddock on one of the owner's properties - he earned his retirement!

    Embarrassing is the best word for it - question is, with 62.5kgs can he win? Gives 11.5kgs to the bottom weight!

    That is really sad, I know some will disagree but horses know when they are king of the kids and he should've been retired to a green paddock after proving himself worthy of one. Not thrown onto the curb to carry top weight in the middle of nowhere on a dirt track.
    This is what gives racing and some racehorse owners a bad name.

    Tough older horses are what you need for middle of nowhere dirt tracks...GW May outclass the cup field or carrying that weight maybe he is being set for a Norwest campaign...wouldn't have thought embarrassing or shameful came into it, more likely hopeful???

    The Perth Cup curse is one of the great sporting curses, it's even got the Hawks pipped against Geelong.

    I count 3 individual winners amounting 7 wins from the last 11 winners following their cup win.

    The bigger issue here is what it does to the Perth Cup. Given most don't hold it in a very good light (as Chris' stats above prove), but this only downgrades the race further, when a past winner needs to go to a dirt track in the middle of nowhere and race for $4,800 first prizemoney - what hope does the once great race have of ever being special again?

    I don't get how taking an ex Perth cup winner to the only place he can win now at this stage of his career has anything to do with the Perth cup??? Chris' stats prove we have ordinary Stayers in WA...it's actually very hard to get a stayer ready without a suitable distance programs available...WA has a sprinting calendar and sires....anyway well done GW and Jenae Grigsby on taking out the yalgoo cup!!!

    Hey Rick.

    There is 1 thing in particular that caught my eye which evolves around Mad Money who finished 4th. Even though the horse is a 17 start Maiden the horse probably did extremelly well to finish within 2 3/4 lengths of Guest Wing considering it was originally alocated 55 kilos but ended up carrying 61. The reason why it happened is because there was a late riding change and Andrew Masters ended up in the saddle. But credit to the stewards for allowing it to happen in this instance because it's better to have 4 fit and healthy horses in the Yalgoo cup than it is to have 3 ;)

    that's really weird raff, cos he carried 59 and 59.5 in other races on the same day??? So you'd think on a horse that is meant to be weighted at 55, that he'd end up with the least weight the jockey could ride at..

    Am sure there was a good reason for it being 2kg more than what he rode at in one of the earlier races...

    Had a few at the bar as he though he had finished for the day???

    I think I read on CRIS where he was granted permission to ride a kilo over on a couple of his rides.

    Good to see Andrew back riding again, he was the best local jockey in Geraldton when he was donning the silks regularly.

    He also cost me a truck load of money when he landed Dance on Board in the Broome Cup a couple of years ago. I had a substantial whack at Tearinupthecountry each way at the $31.... was still a good result but nothing to what it could have been.

    bc4e, think you'll find andrew is only riding at these picnic type meetings.
    he is foreman with his partners training facility...i think... :-?
    they have a fairly decent up and comer.

    He was granted permission from the Stewards to ride a Cup runner 6kgs over as no other rider was available!

    only 4 runners if 1 dident handel track gave the owner who made long trip a chance to pick up $700 3rd money rather then scr

    Yeah but if the horse wins with that weight what happens handicap wise for it next start? There were five runners werent there? I'm not saying it was the wrong decision, just a bit drastic...

    Fall of grace yes. but why shouldnt they continue racing? Thourabreds are born to race. y does a 6 yr old gelding want to retire to a paddok?? Its good for the horse and good for country racing to see a horse like that visit out tracks. us country race goers dont get to watch quality too often. Ive been told hell go to magnet linster...etc and will absoulty clean up.....and in regards to mad money, the stewards made the correct decision. it waz a run out of the box for it...

    The stewards definitely made the right decision to run the horse but why not at 59, like the jockey had ridden earlier in the day.. I dont think anyone but the stewards will be able tao answer that so i willprobably never know..But it is good for country racing..shame he wasn''t out Pigrup when i was there a few weeks ago..Hope they dragging the Perth Cup around with them.

    haha i dare say the yalgoo cup mite be more prestigious..... i have no idea y. mabe he had a pie after the 5th thinking he wasnt riding..... az for re-handicapping, the weight wouldnt matter, cause hed jump from a mdn, to open, not a race mad money would or could win
