The 'losing it's soul' thread prompts me to ask you to submit your racing memories. My best two...

1. My Dad and I bonding over a flask of hot soup and sandwiches at the winter Toodyay races.

2. The only day I EVER wagged school...... I was the high school bookmaker and had amassed a nice little kitty over two years. One day I really fancied this horse at Beverley. I caught the bus to the track with other racing enthusiasts.. no licence obviously and had to get older people to place my bets. It ended up being a cold miserable rainy day. My selection was in the last race. Despite massive temptation I only had small bets in two other races while waiting until the last race. There was every chance the meeting would be abandoned after race six as lighting struck.

The meeting progressed and I had what was a fortune for me as a teenager on this horse in the last.. should but can't remember the horse but Mark Sestich was the jockey at 6 to 1... I got 10s. It won with ease.

This my dumbest memory for me, I went to Ascot way back when I was 15 without my dad ( he was playing bowls ) so was in the ledger ( the part of the track where the non- members were even had it's own bookies ring) and wanting to get in the members trying to get any bloke to get me in as his kid but had no luck so tried to climb the fence during a race thinking everybody would be watching it I got over thought I was safe until the course detective pulled me up he gave me a good dressing down paraded me around to all the gate staff then escorted me out the front gate. So feeling totally dumb headed home which meant I had to go past the ledger again so snuck back into the ledger ran into a kid from school I gave him $20 to back my mates ride in the next a horse called Mission Accomplished and then went back outside to be safe, heard the call it won at 135/1 it had beat the odds on pop National Boy so I snuck back in to collect what was a fortune for a 15 year old kid and the kid who I gave the money to just handed back the $20 and said he forgot to put it on , so I am sure you can all picture the scene me totally pissed off and him looking stupid I then had to trudge home go down the bowling club and tell the old man my story as you may have guessed he had given me $10 so half the bet was his so it is a day I will never forget. DUMBO I should have just put the bet on myself.

Crikey, where do I start. A litlle chestnut mare called Gleaming, that I had a bit to do with, went to Phil Coulson's whilst her trainer Jack Jones holidayed in Spain. It went around in reinsman schools trials for weeks with no race starts. After about 6 weeks, it draws barrier 10 in a smart 10 horse field. 25/1 on offer - into about 5/2 - and it bolts in on a perfect Coulson drive. Drove home from GP whistling Dixie with a pillow case of cash (literally) and bought my first house the following Monday (when you could buy houses in Carlisle for 28k). A good memory.
Gotta throw in Scornvale's Karrakatta Plate win. It had allegedly "trained off" after earlier 2yo wins. I think the trainer was keen to spell her but the apprentice convinced him to keep going on a very light program of just the lad and the horse "mucking around" in the 2 weeks lead up. Got 10's as it lead all the way and won with its ears pricked. We ended up at the Ascot Inn and wisely caught a cab home!!! Big result. Better stop there - could fill the page - mostly unsuccessful haha. I think the Steelo Match Race was the most electric atmosphere I ever experienced at any race meeting I ever attended - unmatched.

I went to Ascot one day and this kid gave me $20 to put on a horse called Mission Accomplished. It won at 135/1 so I collected $2720. I gave the kid back his $20 and told him I forgot to put the bet on. It's the easiest $2700 I ever made.

As a kid, use to go to the trots and sit on the hill with some mates, kids weren't allowed at trots, but we would all sit with rugs and radio. One of my mates mums would walk up the hill every race and put our bets on. Woud sit there from the 1st race till he last, they were great times, kids nowadays wouldn't sit there for 1 race

When we were teens, The Diva, THe Doc & I used to sit upstairs at Belmont & Ascot watching the on course tote (betting on country meetings like Albany & Geraldton) intently when we were betting in $1 and $2 amounts & the on-course pools totalled a few hundred dollars when betting closed. With such small pools there were huge price variations so you could get a short priced favourite paying $3 a place or something silly.

It helped we knew a girl behind the tote who could cancel tickets for us if the prices went the wrong way so we waited until the last minute then filed on with our $1 bets trying to pinch a few dollars depending on what appeared the most value. WE had some ripper results favourites paying $20 for the win & then give us enough to get some burgers on the way home...............fun times.

My proudest memory is that I was lucky enough to work the legendary Village Kid, he might have been 21 at the time but if you got him fit enough he still would have flogged the rest of the horses in the stable,

I remember heading out to Ascot during the school holidays, putting our bets on with the tote lady that we thought we could get away with it, got them on but when we went to collect she decided to ask for our ID which obviously we didn't have, little pay bonus for her that day!

Funny time at Ascot once out the back waiting to have a bet on Geraldton in the Old E/States ring, when the announcer came over with a late riding change on a horse with former Geraldton jock Russell Sale the new rider.
    It went something like this

"Attention late riding change on No 9 Blue Spec, new rider R.Sole, oops I mean R.Sale"

Had everyone in the ring in stitches, pretty sure it was deliberate too not a slip of the tounge

Racing, has been in the blood for a very long time.my grandfather(whom I never met) was a jockey in England from the Newmarket area he was killed in a race fall.My Mum worked in the stables of Sir Jack Jarvis.one of the junior apprentices was a certain Lester Piggott my mum could never understand anything when he spoke, pretty much the same now.
I remember, I was at primary school when I think it was the 2000guineas was on for 3yo which was run on a Wednesday at 3.00 I told my uncle to back a horse called Pretandre for me,he was 21 years old (so he could bet with the bookies) it was about 2.45 and I told the teacher I was feeling very sick and (as school finished at 3.45) I need to go home she sent me home and then I had to run approximately a mile and a half to the bookies, just so I could hear the race outside on the pavement. The horse finished third in a field of about 25 runners ended up in front.
The following year my dad to me to the English Derby which Royal Palace won.this was the first time I had been to the races and was absolutely blown away. The tick tack men with the white gloves shooting the bookie prices all over the place there must have been close to 100,000 people there or maybe only 10,000 I have no idea but the thrill has stayed with me ever since.

best memory was as a uni student going back about 10 odd years now. Backed Prince Of Vasac in the last on a terrible day at Belmont Park. Horse was near enough last at the turn so I start walking out to the car park thinking its no hope....... Only to see it storms down the outside and wins at $60's. I had a $15 win bet on it. Im still smiling just thinking about it! I have been a victim ever since!!!! :)

That's prob my best memory, worst memory was when I was given a tip for Tribula to beat Northerly at some race at Belmont Park. Thinking the tip was a bum steer I back Northerly only to see it run 4th (I think) and Tribula winning at $30's................... Has to be the emptiest feeling in the whole wide world.

Did you ever think (after seeing the running of that Perth Cup) that Rogan Josh would be competitive in a Melbourne Cup? Personally I thought he'd be competitive after seeing him run in that Perth Cup, the 3200m didn't worry him and he ran it right out. Just got beaten by a better horse on the day - King Of Saxony

Well its hard to say. I mean from memory Rogan Josh only got beaten by a a neck (not sure I cant remember), maybe it was just King Of Saxony's day to win. I'm actually looking for that 1999 Perth Cup but nowhere on the internet can I find it.
