    From the stewards report:

    General

Driver Mark Reed was stood down pending a stewards investigation under the provisions of rule 238 for failing to comply with stewards orders when they attempted to take a urine sample from him after his driving engagements.

Will never forget a story from a trainer who's horse won the final event of the night up the bush here one night..going back a few decades here...stewards wanted to take a urine sample of the horse after the race...but the horse just wouldn't go..they tried and tried...horse wouldn't budge...they then decided to follow back to stables...trainer said he got a good head start..when he got back home the horse did the biggest wee he had ever seen! When stewards arrived...nothing again. Stewards gave up. Would the horse have returned a positive ?..lets just say that the horse wasn't the only one who was 'relieved' . JJ you will remember the trainer quite well. Had some very good horses too.

The last race of the night story haha.....freezing cold, the swab box colder than Mawson's Hut, the horse not cooperating, everyone wants to go home, including the stewards.....there were a lot of "assisted passage" winners in the last race at Merredin or Kellerberrrin.....had to wait one night in Wagin for an hour after a surprise win in the last before the horse cooperated...told em it would be negative...and it was. We were more surprised than the stewards with the win!!! Never got home until about 1.00am ...and we had jobs to go to the next day....we were all desparados in those days...I think the winning cheque was $420 .

^^ How does the saying go..? No names no pack drill...the trainer was one from the past...we have talked about him on the punters forum...lets just say he had a chequered career and was eventually caught up with by the stipes. Been out of the game a little while. Had 2 or 3 very smart ones and a few not so. He was a driver too.

He was a likeable bloke too a bit of a brat but a likeable rogue if you like. The hint is in that statement VK but not to be repeated 'on air'. In fairness to the guy.

May is the operative word. Moving right on...hey JJ the Trayning Cup was on the other day at Kelleberrin..what was the Trayning track like ? Did they draw a few people and punters ? Raced at night ? Non tab meets...always read the results in the old Countryman Newspaper in the school library.

    Mark Reed

Supplied sample, looked to clear to be urine.

When questioned was asked to drop his pants and refused.

Not sure what a drivers responsibilities are "after his driving engagements".

Make of it what you will.

Oh I remember him alright Riders.....employed one of the top drivers on occasions with great success. They would get out of the cart and walk off very quickly, sometimes shaking their heads in amazement at how well their steed traveled in the run.
I recanted some old Trayning memories in a previous thread...daylight meets on a spacious half mile with a huge shadow from a tree cast over the track at the 400m which often caused havoc with shadow jumpers...some of the most chaotic racing I've ever seen but huge fun. Good local crowds out for a days racing. Les Williams was the King of Trayning, Tony Van Blitterwyk was the course announce perched on a ladder, a tinpot tote, a grandstand, a few bookies and plenty of frothies....provided and this is a big proviso....it wasn't a cold cloudy day. It could get as cold as a mother in laws kiss some days...fairly low class horses but the Tillers, Groves, Williams, Moores and a few Perth guys used to make for excellent little non tab meets. Used to take some of our lesser lights up there to try and get a quid instead of trialing them. All gone now in the name of rationalisation. Was one of the first country clubs ever established in WA. Didn't have a swab box for years????

He still had a full time job around the time of the story above JJ very early days...he left that job and think then must have taken up training full time. As you said 'we had jobs to go to the next day' he was the same. But I followed his career and had a few laughs to myself recalling his early days. Kept thinking..he's still at it.

He was a bit of a ungainly driver too. Had a style all of his own. And I bet him and the other driver shook there heads in amazement at how well the horse travelled in the run. I'm sure they were very surprised.

Sorry Jum, I am a prime offender for wandering off topic...its an age thing....I head off to collect the mail and end up in the shed tinkering with the mower....and never collect the mail. I blame Riders haha.....he throws a bait out mid topic and I grab it and run.......all the way to Trayning.

Thought I would come on this site and just have a few words to say...now 1675 posts later..I talk too much!
On topic to Mark Reed...just get back to driving how you use to..ie one of the best in Australia. I see JJ that Chris Alford drove 300 winners for the season that's remarkable ...here I go again!
