    A few drivers back then always made me very nervous...JJ may not agree but Wayne Price , John Graham , Mike Beech and Garry Hall Senior! Great horsemen but some of their drives thought at the time were a bit wishy washy. And the guy who drove Mr. Moriarty!

    Haha, you have to laugh sometimes.....had a lovely evening down at GP, very relaxed atmosphere and all that. The business end of the night was all done and was chatting with friends as Race 8 paraded. Had no idea on the race, in fact a few that I had never ever heard of. Everyone was tossing around a 10 buck place bet just for interest. Much learned discussion, none of it from me, so I go No 10 simply on the draw and the past record of number 10's getting sucked along. Trent bloody who? Almost felt guilty collecting the 170 bucks ...check the form... a 6 year old maiden, last 2 runs beaten a combined 96m in running last each time. Might quit while I am ahead with Trent Toogood.

    Riders, I think it was Wally Price back then. Senior always runs himself down as a driver but he drove a lot of winners prior to the emergence of Junior...and wishy washy he wasn't....very aggressive driver. John Graham went okay prior to some horrible race accidents, some really bad ones but he was Bob Humphries private trainer/driver for the "Trunkey" breeding operation and did very well. Mike Beech was never really high profile but he and his father Norm always had some very capable horses and he drove pretty well. Mr Moriarty......I think that was Mike McCaffrey......very capable horse Mr Moriarty. Won a couple Of Interdominion heats in about 1982...Rhetts Law's Inters win......he came from Tasmania where ....I think....Mr Moriaty refers to Len Moriarty, who handled Bandbox, the grand dam of Pure Steel.

    Noticed that Toretto was claimed yesterday for $5k. It was scratched and the stewards report states the reason as being "lame in the near side tendon" and stood down from racing 14 days. Don't know the intricacies of the claiming rules but if you put in a claim for a horse, and it is subsequently scratched due to injury, can you get your money back or is it buyer beware?

    As soon as you put the claim in the horse is yours. I remember a long time ago george way claimed a horse called mattchin off justin warwick. It won the race but it bled and was immediately stood down for 3 months. I think he claimed him for $10k from memory. So he was stuck with a horse that was barred for 3 months. Credit to him though, he got the horse up and running again and won a few races.

    The best ever claim would have been Vanlo Yorker! Went on to win a Pacing Cup. Shannon Suvaljko did wonders with him.

    Vanlo Yorker was in the claimers for a long time but nobody claimed him. Padburgs did the right thing and leased him to Shannon on 50/50 basis. It proved to be a great move to give the horse to him.

    A horse can be claimed even if it scratched under the claiming rules. The claimant must have known the horse has an issue before claiming it.

    An extract from the rules:

    (l) any eligible horse in the declared field for a claiming race including emergencies can be claimed;

    Obviously to prevent connections having a change of mind after accepting.

    Did Justin Warwick claim Allwood`s Chief or was he just running in claimers in Vic?

    Think Justin got Allwoods Chief from South Australia via Victoria. Was with the Hardings from memory. Try A Fluke , Black Diro ( 13 years old was winning races for Warwick ) and he had Vanlo Yorker for awhile too. He was a genius with them and many others.

    Pretty sure Lindsay harper had a go with vanlo yorker as well.

    Spot on riders the hardings had the chief before Justin got hold of him and turned him into a freak.

    I might be wrong but I thought Gavin Lang had Allwoods for a large chunk of his career, and when he came over here, I think Trevor Warwick was training him and Justin just drove him some times, most times. At least, iI think the race book  had T.B.Warwick as his trainer when he first lobbed and for some time after that. Harding may have had him for a little while just prior to him heading West. Again, trying to remember, but I think he got injured and never raced for a couple of years. When I get a moment, I'll look him up.

    You're right jayjay Lang had him for quite a while as did a handful of trainers from a couple of states but the hardings were the last ones to train him before he headed west.

    The horse was probably in Trevor's name for a while but Justin was definitely the trainer. He had a few in his dad's name for a little period before taking his own licence out.
    He won a Bunbury cup with sir clement in his dad's name too.
