Always a crackerjack field and the early odd's of 50/1 show how difficult the assignment will be, he may get out further in the betting too. Beat half the field home in this Group One Weight for Age and he'll have done well.

The Makybe Diva Quiz:
Two West Australian horses have won the Makybe Diva in the previous 20 years - who are they ?
One a little bit more difficult - another handy Perth horse was placed within the last fifteen years - who was it ?

    Black hart bart, placed,another w.a. owned horse, placed horse was entirely platinum..Northerly was the other winner.

    Yes gents Northerly & Marasco were the WA winners, not sure about Black Heart Bart being placed, will have to check that.

    Now the other WA horse that was placed may surprise - was a very good stayer here - not sure if anyone can recall but leading into a Perth Cup was a certainty beaten three or four times in a row, often blocked for a run, finding trouble or just flying home too late.

    Should've won more races, odds may have been huge in this Makybe Diva - ran second.

    One hint - this guy can train stayers.

    That's the one stg, the Alan Mathews trained Free At Last, ran second to Confectioner ( David Hayes ) in 2005.

    Free At Last ran placing after placing leading into a Perth Cup having no luck, then in the Perth Cup from memory was placed again!

    Marasco won the Makybe Diva in 2007, two years after Free At Last was runner up.

    Riders free at last was removed from a melb.cup final field by the committee using  its so-called discretion.powers would have been gut wrenching for connections.

    Yes do remember that stg, she was 7yrs old when runner up to Confectioner in 2005 in a field that included Caulfield Cup winner Mummify.

    Think an elderly lady was the the principle owner of Free At Last, just recall hearing or reading about that at the time.

    The mare Free At Last came from the great Sir Tristam line.

    Happened twice to free at last owners, as the m.v. committee would not let his other horse start in the cox trap for fools.--------the elderly lady you may be thinking of was wendy green owner of rogan josh.

    The other thing about Free At Last and her runner up at big odds in 2005 - back then the race was still called the Craiglee Stakes - the raced was renamed the Makybe Diva in 2007 - the year Marasco took the honours.

    Northerly won it in 2002, and another WA horse won it 40 years earlier in 1962 - and must have been a champion - Aqaunita.

    They were handy horses placed behind Marasco. Apache Cat - Zipping - Maldivian. A few $ there.

    From memory 2005 winner Confectioner well named by Bubble Gum Fellow ( Japan ) could be a bit of a deceiver, running a beaten fave several times, either unlucky or not good enough, an early Caulfield Cup favourite once or twice.

    On another unlucky day, hoop Craig Williams lambasted by trainer David Hayes. Their were also runs, every chance couldn't do the job, ..however a Group One victory in the Craiglee Stakes...can't buy them at Coles!

    wow thats some field behind marasco. My fav was maldivian, owned by wa interests. Won a cox plate leading all the way at double figure odds

    Only been a Group 1 since 2013, before then Group 2.

    2018 winner at 11/1 - Grunt for Damien Oliver, four starts since, all unplaced. You'd take it just the same!

    Yes recall a Melbourne Cup run of Zipping, it was huge. Can remember talking to somebody afterwards about the ride and run.

    Their was a Sandown Cup he won, heavy rain most of the day, became a bit of a bog track, just a small field of six or seven, think bookies took a bit of a risk, he went wooshko straight past them like the track was dry.

    Stg if you want to see one of the most incredible runs I've seen in a Melbourne Cup, have a look at the replay of the 1981 Cup won by Just A Dash and keep an eye on a horse by the the name of Flashing Light.

    Flashing Light led into the straight, two or three horses went straight past it, began to go backwards, even the commentator said "Flashing Light is beaten" then under enormous pressure got badly squeezed out, didn't matter he was gone anyway.

    One of the most remarkable Cup runs ever - he came back, hitting the line strongly to just grab third.

    The replay is around somewhere - 1981 Melbourne Cup. Their is definetly one from just as they are about to enter the straight on You Tube - if you keep an eye on the leader Flashing Light it's amazing.

    ^^ That's the one - how's the way they just ran past him near the top of the straight, then when going backwards nearly goes over the fence, how did Flashing Light run third ? What a gutsy effort.

    Great stuff, whilst everyone associated hopes for the best possible placing, just having a horse considered good enough to run in races like this, would imagine be a thrill.

    They've been great warriors here, top trainer had some good horses, they'll do their best.

    I vaguely remember Confectioner was also known as the lolly making money muncher.

    Absolutely Runyon he wasn't in the good books with punters...looked a perfect Caulfield Cup horse, but flopped a few times as fave and could find trouble and recall Hayes giving Williams a blast.

    Would be interesting to see his overall record. Am sure was an early fave for at least one Caulfield Cup, perhaps did run in one, something says might have been balloted out of one or another big race too, and Hayes not impressed, their was a bit going on with Confectioner. But he's got the Makybe Diva win in the record books.

    Think WA's Free At Last was bolters odds when second to Confectioner in the Makybe Diva. May have been 50/1 or better, not sure now.

    Just looking at his record, Confectioner had 7 wins from his first 12 starts but only 1 win from his next 27 and none from his last 22. All up record 39-8-4-5.

    His last win was the Craiglee when he won first up at his first start for Hayes.

    If involved it'd bring a tear to the eye, when slotted in behind SOJ thought that's a good run...if can hold ground and box on into 5th to 8th that will be great...top of the straight hello...can run top five...then hello...can win!
