Victorians, betting on Victorian horses through their tote, does nothing for WA.
Plenty of data around to make an informed decision instead of making a decision on what 1 or 2 individuals think is the right thing to do.
Surely the money used to subsidize eastern states runners would be better spent (and produce a better field) if it was used to increase the stakemoney.

Give me an open cheque book and I reckon I could do as well as Marty, maybe even better.

Got a feeling what ever happens, participants will see very little difference.
yeah fastmoney, i can't understand why the prize money differs for each race on a saturday.
in the eastern staes you see, say $50k basic for every race except the main race which may be more.
got me bamboozled.

absolutely correct.
it's the same as gambling, there is no point adding a factor that may increase your profitability, if the cost of employing that factor is more than it adds to your bottom line.
You highlight the exact reason why it is okay to cover the full costs of the higher quality attendees...

Serious gamblers = regular losers.
Casinos operate like corporate bookmakers, if you lose regularly they roll out the red carpet for you, if you win regularly you won`t be getting free flights and accommodation, you might actually be shown the door.
Blindly spending industry money without being able to show a tangible positive return, does no one any good .

but could it also put locals in the industry offside?
i don't know much about eastern states racing these days, but i would be very surprised if wa are attracting anything more than bridesmaids or 2nd and 3rd stringers.
i guess i may be wrong as to the quality, but my interest factor in the race is zero, and even if gambling it would be just another race.

I don't know why we bother investing our passions in this industry, when these people invest in magic beans on our behalf.
You can never show a tangible return when you are planning to spend money. The NSW government can not show a tangible return for the $10mil they have just given the Australian Turf Club...but they can see an anticipated return. It is only tangible after the event, once it has been spent and calculated. Even then it is a subjective figure. Due to not knowing what the return woudl be if the money hadn't been spent promoting the event the way it was promoted.
So you will never accurately measure the benefit of the money put into attracting the east coast horses. It will never be tangible at the planning stage...and in any review it will still only be a subjective figure in relation to the financial benefit of spending the money initially...And the magic of figures is that you can summarize them in a way to support nearly any argument....So if someone reported on the benefit of the spend after the event, they can bend the figures to support in a positive way whatever they wanted to happen.
So management just make a decision, justify it, and then report afterwards what a great success it was...

if he was going to add status to the race, then i would be very worried.
