Buddy Franklin out with mental health issues

The Sydney Swans have released a statement announcing Lance "Buddy" Franklin has been ruled out of this weekend's qualifying final against Fremantle due to an "ongoing mental health condition".

Sydney Swans General Manager of Football Tom Harley said the club was "doing everything possible" to support Franklin.

"Our first priority is looking after Lance's health," Harley said.

"Lance has been open with the Club about his condition and while we consider it a private medical matter, he is aware he has our full support.

"The timeframe on his return is unclear at this stage. He will certainly miss this week's match and we will continue to monitor his condition."

Harley said the club has asked for Franklin's privacy be respected during his recovery.

    Mmm it's not good it's good for us Freo fans but not good for Buddy quite sad the black dog pops its head up again

    not suggesting its the reason, but are the swans better off losing against Freo to avoid a certain team and get a possibly easier run into the GF? could losing to Freo benefit them I wonder

    Assuming you are referring to avoiding Hawthorn, it would depend on the result of Friday night's game. To keep it simple, they would need to do what Hawthorn does. If Hawthorn win, Sydney need to win to potentially play them only in GF. If Hawthorn lose, Sydney could lose against Freo to avoid playing Hawthorn until the GF. Whether it would be a benefit or not? :-??
    Depends if they want a home Preliminary Final or not? Also depends if they can beat Fremantle if they had to as well.

    epilepsy is the cause , is epilepsy actually a mental health issue or a medical issue ? don't think those classifications will be helping some how

    I am led to believe that bipolar and epilepsy can be linked, but I am only a google expert. Can any Dr's on here confirm that?

    Apparently the mild epilepsy is something he has been suffering from for some time.

    The mental health issue is not related to the epilepsy.

    It just goes to show, mental illness can affect anybody, at any time.

    Buddy has a huge salary, a gorgeous model fiancée, is an absolute elite sportsman, yet there is something happening in his life that is troubling him enough to cause this.

    I wish him all the best in his recovery, and hope that he can return to the footy field, and do what he does best, sooner rather than later.

    Too true Falc..we also have no idea what goes on in Football Clubs....the press conferences rarely tell the truth with some cardboard cut out Spin Doctor treating the public to half or non truths or coaches who make politicians look like amateurs in spinning or basically saying nothing. In saying that, do we as the public need to know the ins and outs of a players personal situation?? Probably not.

    He's already achieved a lot at such a young age. Two premierships already if I'm not mistaken(I'm no AFL expert) Perhaps that's why this issue is being properly dealt with now?

    Its the old adage. Mental health is to do with the state of mind...not the state of your social standing. At 28 he is maturing as a person and when you get to that stage of your life(at whatever age) you start to deal with issues rather than hide or deny them. He'll get the help he needs and then continue to be the champion footballer he is.

    Mild epilepsy is a term used to describe small seizures, which can be caused by a range of things. Quite seriously, one of which is alcohol withdrawal. I hope buddy can get well and strut around on the field again soon enough, but the finals look done.
