There was a 'spy' that use to come on the Saturday morning preview on the radio with Stewie Shenton...he was quite good , had a sense of humour and played his role well. Can't remember his title...it may have been just 'spy' or something....'spy'. Unfortunately I think he passed away many years ago. He definately added something to the Saturday raceday preview.

    The Lark Hill Spy
Met him once a really nice fellow.

I think it was! Although when I think of it did he come after the other guy...I'm not sure now. Probably was. Shenton just called him 'Spy' like there was all this secrecy attached. Done with good humour.

His tips were quite good too and were worth writing down . And yes it must have been The Larkhill Spy.

Tragic, Elite Belle and now Delicacy - racing is a cruel game even when you are winning half the card each week

Please don't bring up Elite Belle. I was trying to forget :(( =((

The Larkhill Spy trained a couple over time and worked at various places including Bob McPherson and Greg Harper. Loved a bet and rarely missed a meeting.Passed away at a youngish age around late fifties from memory.

I reckon a trackwork spy would be a great addition to the Saturday racing radio preview again!

I'm sure Wes is looking for good ideas to ramp up that show.
  • youknowityouknowit    271 posts
Sure needs some ramping up. Shorten it to 30 minutes would be a good start. Currently 20 minutes of form analysis and 40 minutes of waffle.

Mick The Mock (L Severn) was the best. Went about 16 meetings straight tipping a fav and getting them beat.

Mr X I think George Kenway started off as

Should never have run in the cup with that weight.
  • PCPC    2,265 posts
According to this link (Racing.Com) her rating is 104, so god knows what she would of carried in a Group 1 handicap like the Caulfield Cup. I think 104 is her Victorian rating, so going on that she'd carried feather weight in a Caulfield Cup, she'd be competitive for sure.

What does the weight have to do with it?
Horses run with that much and more every day, do we scratch them all?

she won't have a victorian rating, because she has never raced there.
the 104 will simply be the rating given after she ran 2nd in the KT, and it has not been updated on the vic site.

if she now has a 112 rating in wa, then it would most probably something less in vic, because the 2kg sex allowance is built into her wa rating, but not in other states.

how would she go in vic???
well, my opinion is she would do just fine if she was not retired hurt.
but you will never know unless it happens; but wa racing in the big scheme of things is mostly irrelevant as they are mostly home bred scrubbers.
but she is not your average wa horse, neither in ability nor breeding.

I heard a whisper they'll be giving her plenty of time in the paddock and we may see her back in 2017.

might appear a silly question to the experts, but are mares allowed to foal and then race again?
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,481 posts

    yes, I think so, bomber.....

hey mate whens the move to nth perth?

  • thefalconthefalcon    20,481 posts
hang on..that could be when they go to stud and do not get in foal....some breeding expert will know.

Fields Of Omagh came back from doing two tendons(on separate occasions) to win two Cox Plates so it's not impossible.

I would retire her if I was bob and had the stock he does coming through but me being bustard ass knowing it's the only good one I'll ever have would give her a good rest and come back.

Breeding Barn Every single day of the week. You would not be "bustard ass" if you had Delicacy

It's probably not worth the risk. If they wanted to race on at all costs, they would have given the cup a miss.

Why the farq would you scratch her?
She was thrown in at the weights - basically handed the cup on a platter.
