Submissions To Harness Racing Review

Harness & Greyhounds
The Power Point presentation link from the Industry Information Review sessions (thanks to Matilda Bay) is worth a read:

http://www.rwwa.com.au/home/media-centre/racing-strategic-plans-submissions-requested-5351.html

Lots of "talk" about coming up with a new business plan to arrest the decline in just about every key indicator....turnover, participation, number of foals, on course attendance etc...you name it, it is in decline...and the ridiculous handicapping system which is responsible for the only indicator on the increase, the number of odds on favourites  Seems to be an acknowledgement that the "Metrocentric" model currently in use has been a failure and that a new broom is needed. But has the bird flown?

The "talk" and tenor of the new business plan would seem to reflect a lot of things that the regular harness followers on this forum keep on harping about and a return to more grassroots type thinking, encouraging the "hobby' based nature of many harness participants (sadly many of whom have already bailed out), a review of programming (Tuesday night GP meetings in front of just the participants and a few seagulls) whilst the few remaining outer clubs like Collie and Bridgetown with 4 and 2 meetings respectively suffer the death of a thousand cuts, the nonsense of a handicapping system that allows resuming 4yo stars with multiple hundreds of thousands of dollars in stakes to start in a "maiden", the setting up of "provincial circuits" (whatever that means)....a good start point would be to follow the "Country Cups circuit like they have done in Victoria....and to be fair, the Busselton series encapsulating the holiday season is a winner, credit where credit is due......I could go on but won't. Have a read, it sounds like someone has listened, at least they are thinking about doing something to bolster interest. They have done okay with the themed nights, Chinese New Year Years and so on but when only 5,000 turn out for Inters Grand Final....there were 15,000 at Young Mister Charles's win back whenever that was, then we have a problem. Could we see a return to standing start features (Freo Cup over 3200m like the NZ Cup) as part of a Fremantle Theme, the "Month of Fillies and Mares", the "Four Year Old Month of Greatness", heat racing for the Pacing Cup with points tallies, revive the Easter Handicap (heats again), a stayers series (3200m Easter Cup, Marathon Stakes), the "Winter Series" for the Winter Cup, August Cup etc on as Riders suggested a Sunday rather than a freezing Winters Night....just thought bubbles and again, dodging the "living in the past " pie throwers ....but it seems they are going to at least look at things. MAkes for an interesting read, what comes out of it will be critical to survival.

Should have mentioned the "picnic Race/Gymkhana" ideas in the document. Drove through Byford the other day....houses everywhere, a significant population build up of huge proportions ...and a good track smack bang in the middle of it all. Surely an opportunity presents for doing something here to get the population engaged.

On course turnover at the gallops and trots continues to drop then it plummets then when you think it can't drop anymore it does! Look people in charge..if on course turnover and revenue drops anymore it will become a case of how low do you want it to go?! Now the glorious 1970s and 1980s have long gone. Money is tight especially for a bloke and his family. It's a gambling game , it risking your hard earnt money - as even Gai Waterhouse proclaims.. ' for Gods sake let the punters in for free' .

@JayJay made a quick rare appearance at GP on Friday night i was gob smacked at the crowd .
trots aren't dying nor dead it was pumping this poor cousin of the gallops is doing something right and would be the envy of PR if they attended and seen the crowd
parking was a little bit of a pain . A : finding a spot B:Parking meter coin slot not working and me not even having a credit card luckily some chap took my cash and used he's card for me.
After dropping the Mrs off out at freo i got there in time to watch the Empress but after the drive and parking the young bloke needed the restroom so missed it , got the 2 rugrats an ice cream watched the next race , then the Mrs called ready to be picked up . So all in all the kids loved it they saw a race and got an icecream but through no fault but my own i spent $28.50 between parking and entry didn't have a punt and seen 1 race
Think next time i'll leave the Mrs and kids at home for the night and get a Cab or train

Impossible for those that are not in the inner circle to know how turnover is really going.

You can monitor Supertab pools but have no idea of fixed odds turnover through the TABs and Corporates.

Regrettably Lame Friday night is definitely not the norm but it was great to see such crowd in attendance for the Chinese New Year Meeting. Unfortunately that cannot be replicated on a regular basis.

I know it is a silly way to look at things Chariots, but financially would RWWA and GP be better off to have theses themed nights every week with fireworks and not even have the horses racing?

Fixed odds betting of course is not a guaranteed win. They can lose on a race...they need to make more than what they would have been making on parimutuel tote. From a whisper or two have heard from a couple of bookies who use to bet at GP until they saw the light they said it was horrible to try and win at . Hence the TABs shocking fixed odds prices on some of these horses.

Yes Lame, Chariots is correct ..not the norm but they have tapped a good market with the themes and it was a bumper crowd, no denying..Irish Night, Italian Night etc those themes work, free entry tickets, get the crowd in, they will return and keep spending. New Years was a huge loss, I know there were issues but work around it and revive it ....make it Cup night or something...I don't care who is there, the young beautiful people, the old has beens, just get them there. I still think the Fremantle crowd need attracting...Navy Cup, Freo Cup, saturate Freo with publicity, free entry if you have a Freo post code or whatever...there is a market there waiting to be tapped into. Those nights when the place is full really crank along, is there a better place to be on a hot summer night? (advertising theme in their somewhere haha). They lost a fair bit of their "electorate" when they shut down Richmond Raceway and we need them back.

The horrible truth is that RWWA (The TAB) would be a very profitable organisation if it did not conduct racing in WA and only bet on interstate and international races.

They certainly dropped the ' bet local' lingo. Just what did that mean ? Don't touch eastern states racing ? Bet at your local TAB ? Just bet on WA racing ? Did it mean don't use Betfair ? Who knows . It's been banished now.

Every second ad on racing radio a few years back was ' Bet Local ' made me feel guilty every time placed a bet on a Melbourne or Sydney trot/race or anywhere in the world. What did that 'bet local' actually mean ? Has me stumped but that's not unusual!

I made a comment to the TAB about their product they provide. I said to them having fixed odds opening on local harness racing less than an hour before the race and no chance of having a fixed odds multi on the program. Told them that other providers can up to 24 hours before the meeting have fixed odds available on all races for the night.
Their response was, its a directive from our insurers not to offer that option.

Something tells me that the TAB is very wary about GP and the dominance of one or two punting stables. They bet extremely tight prices and have the early % especially way in their favour. Any signal of horse being backed it's the equilavent of $2.15 into $1.26 or less!

The horrible truth is that RWWA (The TAB) would be a very profitable organisation if it did not conduct racing in WA and only bet on interstate and international races.

Just an observation - i bet Tab.com.au and also OZBet - im totalling dismissing bet365 - never had  an acct their but told you cant get on for much and if you win you get barred

These organizations are obviously about making money - take Saturday night - come lunchtime or earlier TAB.COM  have the fixed odds up for Albion Park Menangle and Melton - they know in alot of races theres 5 or 6 chances -and it all comes down to luck in running - and thats why the odds are up nice and early - Their Winning !!!- their basically saying come on you suckers bet

However it is a far different situation with the Sat night WA country  meeting or a Sat night meeting in the Riverina of NSW - the odds aernt up till 20 minutes before the 1st race - and sometimes they just put them up 15 minutes brefore each race - that defininitely happens for Pinjarra - and Vic and NSW country meetings

Thats telling you one thing - for the punter it is much easier to win on country meetings - and  for the bookmakers ( Tab.com) it is alot easier for them to win at City meetings - thats why they have the odds up so early

And thats why i mainly ( 95%) bet on country meetings - the City meetings all over Australia- are too competitive - and far too hard to win
