Braver than me Marko, just a tentative 10 each way., I was chasing after a couple of stupid bets early on...Our Euphoria and Minikita.....but had Mosquito lined up from Friday when I saw the acceptances....should have followed through on Hilo Angus....but didn't....and backed Don't Look Back instead. Finished up with enough for a cup of coffee tomorrow morning at the bakehouse...no milk, no sugar and no sticky bun.....but a bit of fun just the same.

Anvil Rollover & War Club both $1.20 on tote. Anvil Rollover never stopped firming in the betting..and crunched on tote. Tried to lead - couldn't - punched the breeze and was the first horse beaten.

How about the final race at Bunbury only a small field but at the end were spread out like Browns cows...the third placed horse was going backwards down the back straight but still held third.

War Club, excuse was it was pulling. Didn't look like that....has led comfortably enough in trials before.

It might have had a genuine excuse - they queried the trainer - and he said because of the foul ( wet ) weather the previous week he couldnt give it any fast work

I know it was a 2 year old - taking on open age horses ( ordinary types  though )

I think if it had been race fit it wins by 20 metres - its a nice type who when sat up - can real off some slick qtrs - probably will  win 15 races id reckon

Stewards finally handed down their decision on the Joelyn Yound (Dana Duke0 drive and suspended her for four weeks.

Actually has been driving quite well since that incident and can be a better driver for the experience.

Don't know if I agree with that verdict
You let harpers horses lead and you can't win
    You can't get past them
If she let him cross, she doesn't give her horse best chance of winning

An extract from Rule 149 Duff:

    (1) A driver shall take all reasonable and permissible measures during the course of a race to ensure that the horse driven by that driver is given full opportunity to win or obtain the best possible placing in the field.

On this occasion her tactics made it impossible for to win or obtain the best possible placing. If she surrendered to a free going front runner she had both opportunities. By holding the lead for so long she ran last beaten 47m.

Yes...for gawds sake don't make a race out of a possible procession
  • DuffmanDuffman    141 posts
Yeh I wasn't aware or the best possible placing,
It make sense now why no one takes on a favourite that leads and gets cosy sectionals
I used to yell at the radio for some one to apply some pressure but I guess with in the rules they can't unless of course there good enough to

Hardly a procession when Thereugo is the leader as it gives every horse the chance to run it down.

Lead time of 33.7 is equivalent to a mile rate of 1:44.7 for the 521m so not surprising Dana Duke finished where it did.

The rules is there for this very reason.

Stewards said the lead time of 33.7 was the qickest ever at GP - and equated to a 1st qtr of 25.5

However i do rate J Young as a very good driver and i like backing her drives

I have no issue whatsoever with a driver not relinquishing the lead to a short priced favorite but when they do hold the lead they must be competitive and not drop out beaten at the 400,

On more than one occasion Thereugo has imploded, finished distanced and been sent back to trials when tested for the lead.
Dana Duke obviously has exceptional speed as it held Thereugo comfortably early.....clearly showed they were entitled to roll the dice. Only the stable appeared aware of that pre race but indications were that a test early was possible.
47m was an exaggerated margin with the majority of that ground being lost up the straight the last time .
I can name plenty of short priced or odds on horses beaten far more than 47 m in the last 3 months Barrier 10...scratch.....hmmmmmmm.

Did jnr get time when he held up in the Pacing Cup keeping out David Hercules a couple of years ago?

Yoretto beaten 84m almost certainly should have been. Has won one race at Pinjarra since that run.

Same rules of racing though! The Hall camp argument was something along the lines of he couldnt win if he handed up to Hercules, he would have finished a hell of a lot closer though!

That was the last night that the dozen or so people I use to go with regularly walked away from the game, they don't own any anymore and havent been back since. (Not in the herc camp or anything just could see what even blind freddy could see).

I backed the Young horse and wanted her to hold the front (preferably not in record time) because like mentioned earlier here Therugo has been fragile but if this decision helps to appease some people then i'm for it.

    She will bounce back.

Toretto from memory initially handed up to Bettors Fire after making him do a bit of work but not excessively so.It was when David Hercules came around that he vacated the trail and was hard driven to lead again and driven even harder to  hold out David Hercules.

The other part of this equation is that Thereugo appears almost impossible to control anywhere but in front. Should other drivers always hand up to him because he is intractable ?
  • MarkovinaMarkovina    3,341 posts
I think some people have got very selective memories calling Therugo fragile and suspect

Its put in one shocker - 1st up from a spell - and all horses - and i dont care how good they are - if they are going to get beaten badly - it is their 1st run back from a spell

I can remember a big Sydney gallops bookie - retired about 10 years ago - and he said he loved taking on /laying horses 1st up from a spell

I can even remember that Dave Carlson on Sky Channel - saying alot of harness racing punters dont like backing horses at their 1st run back from a spell - and he is 1000% correct .

I agree that first up can be an isolated case Marko but a check on harnessweb leaves no doubt as to Thereugo 's relative performance issues. No memory needed when it is black and white. ps The horse is very smart,no knock on him there. My point is that there were enough doubts about the horses manners to encourage a tussle in that particular race. The early sectionals were out of this world but until the questions are asked in running then everyone is guessing. Hindsight is a marvellous thing ...I thought 4 weeks was a bit harsh for Jocelyn in this instance.
