Bargains Galore At The Inters

Harness & Greyhounds
Was doing a bit of reading today. Can a bargain buy that can win the Inters? well, history suggests yes is the answer. Everyone pretty well knows about some celebrated bargains of the past....Pure Steel purchased for $2400 as a yearling, the top horse that Steelo crushed the spirit out of, Rip Van Winkle just $2200 as a yearling, Mount Eden reputedly purchased for $600, top NSW horse who raced with success in WA Bold Biami just $500 and Mister Karamea just $5,000, not bad for a world record holder as a 2 year old.
Interdominion winner First Lee, yes, he had luck on his side but won nevertheless, cost just $1,000. But it gets better....1957 Inters Champ Radiant Venture was purchased as a 2 year old for just 150 pound. And speaking of pounds, the immortal Globe Derby..... whose original name was Cyril C.....was onsold more often than Telstra shares. First sale, just 25 guineas (1 guinea was 1 pound 1 shilling), then onsold for 90 guineas, then 150 guineas and finally for $375 guineas before he stood at stud (with a 2.8 MR life time record...remarkable in 1910) and changed the face of the Australian Standard bred forever.
Ayr, the mighty dam of 1939 Inters winner Springfield Globewho went on to sire 1955 winner Tactician, cost just 37 and a half guineas.

But the gold medal for bargains is a no brainer. Adistar, the dam of mighty South Australian champ Minuteman, winner of the 1964 Inters at the Melbourne Showground, was sold in foal for 17 guineas.....the foal she was carrying was Minuteman and footage of his win in Melbourne is attached.
17 guineas would barely buy you a pint and a pie at GP on the night of the Grand Final.

What was the story behind Blacks A Fake - i might have the wrong horse - but i thought the lucky old baarstard who owned it got it by accident - he bought some run down old house on a few acres - and the person selling said look - theres a couple of yearlings in that paddock their - you can have  them as well .

CADUCEUS...was a result of act of kindness how he arrived to be trained by jack litten...Jack was hosing down a horse  by the name of our rodger who went on to win n.z. cup.. when this lad standing there watching, when jack picked the lad up put him on Our Rodgers  back  with the boys father watching from a distance...The father had purchased a broodmare couple years earlier ,His thought process was  anyone that could be so kind and friendly to children, would have to be the same with his horses, That's how caduceus  came about  registered 14.1 hands high as two year old competed in 5 inters winning 1960 inters... carried the moniker THE MIGHTY ATOM...another
inters winner was known as the mighty atom what was his name?

There have been a lot of "mighty atoms" but 1952 Inters winner  Avian Derby was one.He was owned by legendary gallops trainer George Hanlons brother Fred. Radiant Oro was a pony, possessed of paralysing speed and  also carried that moniker......very fond memories of John Maxwell Retzlaff's dynamic little champ.

Something happened to his driver prior to that Inters win....Syl Bray didn't drive him in Sydney, it was Dave Wilson I think. He also missed the 3rd round of heats with colic but won the final. My Dad saw him race, I never did but he said he was something else, absolute champion.
