An open letter to RWWA Thoroughbred Chief Steward Brad Lewis
Dear Sir
I would like to express my disappointment at your failure to provide a comprehensive explanation and to produce the vision and evidence upon which your decision was based to uphold a 2nd against 1st protest for indirect interference in Saturday's $1,000,000 Group 1 Railway Stakes at Ascot.
Given the extremely contentious nature of this decision I firmly believe that the 25,000 strong crowd, industry participants, the punting public and the racing media were and still are owed, an explanation for this decision.
With millions riding on the outcome of this protest there is little doubt that if the reasoning behind this decision had been provided together with the vision and evidence upon which this decision was based that this would have diffused at least some of the resulting controversy which unfortunately has cast WA racing in an extremely poor light on a day when the national and international spotlight was firmly focused on WA racing.
Surely if you were confident enough to act with 100% certainty and uphold this protest for indirect interference, then your reasoning and video evidence would hold up to any external scrutiny.
RWWA officials demand consistently high standards of professionalism and accountability from licensed industry participants and those associated with the industry why shouldn't the industry both demand and expect the same level of professionalism and accountability from you and your stewards panel and other RWWA employees.
RWWA is not a private club, it is a government funded organisation and therefore it should and must be subject, both now and in the future, to the same level of scrutiny and accountability as any government department.
Your failure to provide a public explanation for your protest decision is both arrogant and contemptuous of the public, the industry, the Australian racing media and the WA taxpayers who pay the wages of yourself and your RWWA colleagues.
Sadly this contemptuous attitude is all too typical of what the industry, the public, punters, and the racing media have come to expect from RWWA and this is simply not good enough, you and your panel are in effect public servants.
Your stance in this regard is unprofessional and reeks of hypocrisy given the level of professionalism and accountability that is demanded of industry participants who are held accountable for the horses they train even in their absence.
If you and the members of your stewards panel wish to regain credibility in regard to this controversial decision in the eyes of the public, punters, industry participants & the Australian racing media then I strongly urge you to call a televised media conference that is open to both the public and the media as you take them step by step through the reasoning (including the available vision) behind your decision.
Like many others within the industry who derive their living from it I eagerly look forward to hearing and viewing your explanation and the reasoning that led to this contentious decision.

Andrew take a breath, go on holiday, do something but leave Racing alone for a little while. It sounds very much like it is eating you up.
It is common practice in other states for stewards to give an interview in regard to contentious protests why should it be any different here.
Mr Lewis decision to refuse an interview in regard to the result of an extremely contentious protest or to provide media briefing was extrmely poor and they lost an opportunity diffuse a lot of the controversy before it had even really gathered momentum.
Do you consider Ron dufficy a mug Damien?
I certainly dont, I consider him one of the best racing analysts if not the best racing analyst in this country and he labelled the protest decision based upon the vision available as being disgraceful and that there was no way based upon that vision that a portest for indirect interference could be upheld.
If the situation in regard to the first two horses was reversed I would still be arguing the same point and so would most going on the vision we have been shown which is totally inconclusive.
I like many others would like to see what their decision was based upon and if their 100% certain and confident that they made the correct decision I fail to see why that would be a problem,
Surely if they're confident in their decision making process then they have nothing to fear from this so why shouldn't it be open to viewing by people who are interested in seeing for themselves exactly how they came to formulating this decision and what conclusive evidence it was actually based upon.
There will be fallout however, Wes Cameron doesn't think so, but I wouldn't be giving too much chance of visiting Trainers from NZ or from some larger stables in the East just quietly deciding that Perth and WA are just too hard.
I think you need to quickly come to the realisation, that you are not about to change this result, you are not about to have anyone hung over this matter that sat listening to evidence in that protest.

This was and still remains an extremely contentious issue and while Wes is knowledgeable about a lot of industry issues he is not always correct in his assessment nor am I but you can guarantee that this decision has changed the landscape for protests in WA racing for many years to come.
The money is excellent, you dont have to bring the best in Australia, throw up an eastern states hoop, and the prizes are there for the picking.
If you think they wont come because of one controversial protest decision, I think you are wrong.
Heres a reminder: Ortensia x 2, Niconero x2, Takeover Target x2, Markus maximus, snipers bullet x2, Canali, Gathering. Im sure ive missed a few in there but this is just the last three years.

Sooner or later the result is evident. The crow flies away and lives to scavenge another day or he gets cleaned up at full force.
Either way, there is a result.
Just because you think the result is wrong doesn't mean you are right.
Build a bridge Andrew otherwise you will implode with moralistic frustration.
You have been through enough unwarranted turmoil in your life, peace will not come to you with this pent up anger towards Perth Racing and RWWA.
Who cares who thinks the protest decision was right or wrong, opposing views and opinions will always be to the fore and we cling on to those who we believe can give our argument more credibility. In this case Ron Dufficy. Each side can pin-point high standing, well known figures and obviously a lot of others who are entitled to have an opinion as well.
The decision rests with Brad Lewis and his team and everyone has to abide by the decision. If the connections want to take it further then they have every right.

But perhaps you are right, a couple of broken down old hacks might make the trip seeing how they think we are such easy beats over here.
It's a highly contentious decision, the available video is totally inconclusive and I'm far from an orphan in believing that.
The public, the punters and the media were treated with contempt when Mr Lewis declined to discuss the decision when asked for a post protest interview if you're 100% confident you've made the right decision then you have nothing to hide.
By failing to discuss their reasoning and airing vision which clearly had to have been conclusive, they're missing an opportunity to clear the air and diffuse the controversy surrounding this decision.
Time for Brad & co to man up and face the music.
Maybe we need to keep looking for someone to step up and fill the shoes of J Zucal?
It would take all the heat out of the situation if they aired conclusive vision which they must certainly have in their possession in order to make such a critical decision based upon indirect interference.
I waited because logically given the controversy surrounding this decision I expected them to come out and provide a logical explanation and to air their conclusive vision but for some unknown reason they haven't.
Why would you stick your head in the sand if you're confident you have made the correct decision.
Like Wes says, build a bridge mate. Life is too short.
I work for the government, and I can tell you one thing, the squeaky wheels gets the oil. Send your letter. Even if it makes you feel better.
If I'm pissed off, and it seems it's more regular as I get older, I make sure I complain, because the silent majority are way too silent.
But, in saying that, I make sure I recognize good service and I make sure they hear it.
Go on, Son. Send it.

By the way I'm not stupid I know the result won't be overturned and to overturn it now would be more damaging than making the decision in the first place anyway however I firmly believe that we are entitled to a logical explanation of their decision and to view their conclusive video evidence.
Let me put it to you another way, trainers and jockeys etc when they're inquired into or charged with a breach of the rules have to prove their case, why shouldn't the stewards in an instance such as this have to publicly prove theirs.
Don't rely on assumption. Send a letter to Perth Racing and they'll have to reply.
They don't have to reply to a forum.
If they've got nothing to hide, it should be no big problem for them.
