very good point jum, but lets not knock Joey cos he chooses to ride in a competitive market!!!!! =)) =))

We have all been told that Willie is an out and out champion, a genius.. Still amazes me why he is here riding for 1 or 2 Group 1's a year when he naturally performs at a world class level.. :-?? :-?

It's obvious Willie is our best by a mile, but i just wasn't aware that WA was the centre of the universe in relation to all things to do with Jockey's.

Wouldn't be surprised if Joey still wins :D

Why would Pike leave he has the cream of the crop here
  • RIORIO    14,902 posts
Where did ^^^that question come from?? who suggested Willie would want to leave? He has got it made here, and if he wasn't here then the 2 young fellas that went to Melbourne may actually still be here. But they were never going to get to the top of the pile here, while Willie was here and Harvey and a the handful of senior riders we have were going around.

If I was Willie, I would be concreting the boots in and not leaving for love or money.

how many race meetings per jockey make those figures?
  • therealkramertherealkramer    8,008 posts
@thefalcon It's metro meetings only so it works out about even with HK racing midweek and weekends and Perth mostly the same although they do occasionally throw in the odd provincial meeting midweek.

This is ridiculous...I know it's just a bit of fun and I shouldn't let it get to me, but it's like comparing Hawthorn FC's season wins with the Ellenbrook FC U12's season wins...

I don't necessarily agree. The talent pool of horseflesh is very even in HK so it allows for the best jockey/ride to triumph. Additional to that, most of the racing is handicap/ratings based very little WFA or Group racing and ratings go up and down-Moreira can ride light and is obviously in demand.. Pike can ride the race of his life but if he comes up against a Hot Goods or Kia Ora Koutou, he is riding for 2nd place. I pretty much started this thread last year because Pike looked on track for a ton which despite the dearth of riding talent in WA is still a HUGE achievement-pegging it against Moreira was never really meant to be a claim that he is better

Pike just needs moreira to ride more often over here and he would have this in the bag

:-? couple of reasons I can think of.
    To compete against the best
    and
the prizemoney column below Bowman has about the same wins for rides $-)

    Jockey Name 1st 2nd 3rd 4th 5th Prize Money Strike Rate Starts
    William Pike 28 18 16 8 10 $960,825.00 27.70% 101
    Hugh Bowman 28 16 13 12 12 $3,094,430.00 26.40% 106

    how very true, linc.

that is why most of the successful jocks are of mature years....communication and knowing traditions is paramount.

@lincolnish How many set weight or WFA races are there then? You only prove my point by arguing that networking is just as important as anything. The owners, trainers and punters demand winners. It's that cut throat. That's why Pike, Lane and Boss are back here-they were churned and burned. Whyte, Moreira and Purton will always demand rides but who are HK's pin up horses? Able Friend? Aerovelocity? How often do you see those horses running around?
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,485 posts

also, Kramer you must remember the jocks must do their own PR...so such thing as "managers" in HK.

you have to be able to string more than 2 words together...and to sell yourself.

a lot do not have that talent...the successful ones do.
