Bunbury Preview, 17th Feb 2016 (The Leg Up)

West Australian Racing
RACE 1 APH CONTRACTORS MAIDEN 12:35 PM (1116M)
We have a tricky two-year-old maiden to kick off the program, with each of the runners facing the starter for the first time. After dissecting the trial form we have narrowed it down to a race between INVINCIBLE MODE and FAIR NAKITA, and we are locking in the latter as our on-top pick. Team Giadresco is enjoying a prosperous start to 2016 and FAIR NAKITA looked very sharp when showing good gate speed to lead and win her Belmont February 1 trial. Looks a ready-made racehorse. INVINCIBLE MODE looks the likely favourite on the strength of a sizzling Belmont trial win and he is by boom stallion I Am Invincible. Will have to fire up early from the tricky gate and may be vulnerable late in the race. MASTER MAGICIAN was doing his best work on the line when winning his second trial outing here on Friday, while PASSIONNE hails from the astute Simon A. Miller stable and must be respected.

Tips: 5-1-2-7
Suggested Bet: (5) FAIR NAKITA each way.

RACE 2 JCW ELECTRICAL MAIDEN 1:12 PM (1705M)
A very nice maiden here with a few talented types destined for bigger things, but we have settled on the Grant Williams-trained HEART STARTER on top, who has been narrowly beaten at his two runs back from a spell. Appeared to have the race shot to pieces here on February 5, however, he did do a bit of work through the early and middle stages, leaving him vulnerable to Eyes Wide Open over the final 50 metres. If William Pike can find a bit of cover this time, expect to see the Domesday gelding hit the line strong. Former eastern stater HAKUNA MATATA is having his third run in the west for trainer Ross Price, after improving sharply second up over the longer 2000-metre journey to finish second last start. The drop back to 1705 metres may not look ideal, but the four-year-old should be rock hard fit and flying home late. MAYBE ONE MORE drops back from an open three-year-old handicap at Ascot last start when finishing sixth behind a nice type in Black Dynamite. Prior to that was narrowly beaten as a $1.70 favourite in similar company to this, while SASSE DE BLISHK will relish the step up in journey after just missing behind Rosewood Hill and Echoes in Time at Pinjarra last Sunday week.

Tips: 5-1-4-12
Suggested Bet: (5) HEART STARTER to win.

RACE 3 STRATCO BUNBURY MAIDEN 1:52 PM (1116M)
With a handy barrier and claim to apprentice Casey Hunter, the Neville Parker-trained TINTILLY looks a great each way play in the third of the day. The Oratorio four-year-old was jumping out of the ground when finishing sixth first up here on February 5. TINTILLY should take a stack of improvement from that run and from just behind a decent tempo will be hitting the line strong. The obvious danger looks to be the Grant Williams-prepared STREETS OF LONDON, who has finished second as a short-priced favourite at both starts to date. Having his first start in 66 days and the wide alley means William 'The Wizard' Pike will need to weave some magic to get him in a winning position. Look out for him storming home late. Trainer Simon A. Miller brings Danehill Express colt EXPRESS BOY to the track for the first time after three nice trial performances. The three-year-old wasn't asked for much when winning his latest effort at Lark hill and Aaron Mitchell should get a lovely run from the inside gate, while WOVEN will improve second up for trainer Brett Pope, after a first-up fourth at Pinjarra on February 2.

Tips: 7-2-6-4
Suggested Bet: (7) TINTILLY each way.

RACE 4 THINKWATER BUNBURY MAIDEN 2:32 PM (1116M)
One of the best races of the day with all eight runners having genuine claims on victory. Leading trainer David Harrison holds a strong hand and we have selected his talented, but erratic, mare UNIVERSAL MOON on top. Did a big job to miss the start and still run on to place against reasonable opposition at Ascot last start and we're going to go against Pat Carbery, who has hopped off to ride stablemate ROGER THE ROMAN. UNIVERSAL MOON has more than her share of ability and with a clean getaway should take a stack of beating. SCOTTY BEAU showed enough ability to get a run on Australia's Got Talent when coming from well off the pace to score impressively on debut here on Australia Day. Trainer Bruce Watkins looks to have a very nice type in his care and has wasted no time stepping him up in class. ROGER THE ROMAN is flying at the moment and comes off a slick win down the straight 1000 at Pinjarra last start. he doesn't know how to run a bad race and will more than likely start favourite, while the third of Harrison's runners JESTPATIM is stepping out for the first time in 214 days, without a trial, but is more than capable of running a big race first up especially with 'The Pontiff' Paul Harvey on board.

Tips: 6-8-7-5
Suggested Bet: (6) UNIVERSAL MOON each way.

RACE 5 WEATHERSAFE BUNBURY HANDICAP 3:10 PM (1216M)
We really liked the way ALL GEE stuck to his task first up at Ascot on February 3, when after facing the breeze and being off the bridle a long way from home, fought on well to finish third behind the impressive Forever Diamonds. The Brian Kersley-trained three-year-old trialled really well before that and from a middle gate, jockey Brad Parnham should be able to find some cover and hit the line strong. COULEUR BIZARRE returned in nice style finishing second here on February 5. Should get a lovely run from barrier one and if Troy Turner can get some clear galloping room will be right in the finish. If NIAYCHI had drawn a better gate, we would have put the son of Balmont in our first two selections, after hitting the line strong after covering ground in running here on February 5. Watch for him to be flying late, while there was plenty of money for IMPRESSZAR on debut here on February 5 and usually where there's smoke there's fire. May pay to follow up.

Tips: 2-3-4-11
Suggested Bet: (2) ALL GEE to win.

RACE 6 UNITED CRANE HIRE HANDICAP 3:45 PM (1216M)
This is the first leg of the Quaddie and we feel there is a clear standout in the form of promising grey mare THREESUN. The Vaughn Sigley-trained four-year-old couldn't have been more impressive winning first up here on Australia Day and she followed it up with a game effort in the Pearl Classic at Pinjarra last start, finishing on the placegetters' heels after racing wide, without cover, throughout. THREESUN looks the goods and should be winning. QUEEN OF TEASE appears the hardest to beat following placings at her past two outings, with Countercat franking the form by progressing from Mt Barker to win at Ascot. QUEEN OF TEASE hails from an in-form stable and not many are riding better than apprentice Clint Johnston-Porter at the moment. it is hard to knock the recent competitive form of HEEZA TORIO and he should enjoy a soft run from the gate, and is a noted fast-finisher, while BOY BYRNES has a bit of ability but is racing first up without a trial. Former eastern stater LIFE OF CRIME is the interesting runner and it will pay to following the market movements to determine his winning chances at his WA debut.

Tips: 3-6-9-5
Suggested Bet: (3) THREESUN to win.

RACE 7 CITY AND REGIONAL FUELS HANDICAP 4:20 PM (1420M)
This is an interesting special conditions handicap and we have narrowed it down to two with NEXT CONTESTANT and OPEN ERA. And this does look a really nice option for the Sean Casey-prepared NEXT CONTESTANT, who looks set to bounce back after having little to no luck after missing the start at Ascot on February 6. Was really charging home late after being well back turning for home and it looked like a 'get on me next start' run to us. NEXT CONTESTANT on top, ahead of tough front-runner OPEN ERA who looks set to run a super-cheeky race with only 51.5kg on his back. Is in reasonable form and looks the main danger to the topweight. We're on the lookout for an improved showing from MILITARY MIGHT, who has slid down four rating points in his past two starts and looks well suited against this opposition, while PRESENT ARMS was super first up here on February 5 and is capable of getting back and running on into the first four.

Tips: 1-10-2-11
Suggested Bet: (1) NEXT CONTESTANT each way.

RACE 8 MGIB HANDICAP 5:00 PM (1705M)
We were fairly keen on MAJOR DETAIL when he resumed here on February 5 and you couldn't help but notice the way he worked to the line, giving the impression on a stayer in the making. Gets the extra distance he is looking for second up in this, and we expect him to get back from the wide alley and be running on over the top of these late. POETS PRINCE hails from the hot Stephen 'SJ' Miller stable and missed out on back-to-back wins by a pimple at Pinjarra last start. Stable is flying and this fellow will take some beating. Great Southerner GEE PEE ESS has been racing consistently and is rock-hard fit for this assignment, while TRULY GOLD is the stablemate of our on-top pick and can't be taken lightly.

Tips: 5-1-3-7
Suggested Bet: (5) MAJOR DETAIL each way.

RACE 9 BUSSELTON HYUNDAI HANDICAP 5:40 PM (1705M)
This looks a nice option for STUDIO FIFTY FOUR after two minor placings since resuming from a spell last month. Has form around the progressive Pounamu and was beaten under a length against reasonable opposition at Ascot last start. Inform Jarrad Noske should give him the gun run from the sweet inner alley and this fellow should be looking for the longer journey third up in this. ARCADIA DELIGHT couldn't get out of her own way when well beaten second up here on Australia Day, however, William Pike goes on and blinkers have been added to keep her mind on the job. Look out for an improved showing here. MAMBOKADZI is an honest mare who comes out of the same Ascot race as STUDIO FIFTY FOUR and has to warrant consideration, while READY TO FIRE is racing consistently and her the services of Paul Harvey for this assignment.

Tips: 2-10-3-7
Suggested Bet: (2) STUDIO FIFTY FOUR each way.

The Run of Ninu Yarada last start was enormous, Three wide the trip and back to last on the corner. Got home well enough for me to have a bit eachway today @ $51 in the last.

Not well weighted and not well drawn and an inexperienced kid on says I shouldn't be having a bet. But a little nibble I shall partake in.

It will be going in the quaddie, I remember you pointing it out last start. Black bookers at 50-1 are always good!

as everybody is striking it won't cost anybody money if they take any notice!

it is fascinating to me to see how poorly it performs these days as to how it used to perform, since the powers that be stopped caring that sections are not there more often than they are, and that all the data errors on cris remain unfixed.
my eternal thanks to the rwwa racing department for making me see the light that it is not worth the effort.

  • Heartstarter will eat the 1700m up. I think $2.60 is generous and if you were on last start you would want to be backing up here.

Just on Heeza Torio surely the 2 wins from 43 starts is reason enough to stay away. I'm not sure how good the ex Queensland horse with grant Williams is but $7.50 might be worth finding out for.

Good call WPE. Didn't we all want to have doubled our bet top of the straight and again halfway down the straight.

was surprised to see it settle so close again though... last start may have been a victim of circumstance and was hunted fwd to sit on pace, but today it drew a gate yet still sat off the leader, unusual for a BP runner, it won that's the main thing!! <:-P

Im after Universal Moon here but High Limit at $41 could run a race, second up and distance record all suit.

Would have been nice if Universal Moon wanted to run staright at any time in the straight. When that horse gets a clue it'll go alright. Its own worst enemy

I didn't back up for the exact reason i was on last start. You are guessing about which Pike turns up-the one that slaughters them or rides to win. The margin today just underlines what a certainty beat it was last start. If he was trying last start then he is massively overrated and if he wasn't that's even more reason to abstain from betting. Good day for a strike I reckon :-B

On De Gear if you ask me!

It did win well, with something in hand, against some decent horses too

maybe just an astute trainer that has his horse peaking at the right time and keep it to himself...
