Bunbury Cup Day Preview, 17th Mar 2016 (The Leg Up)

RACE 1 XXXX GOLD AUSTRALIAN PALE ALE MAIDEN 12:38 PM (1100M)
Leading Albany trainer Steve Wolfe saddled up Chasing Chaos to victory on Stakes Day and he can get off to a flyer on Cup Day with Demerit first starter FAULTY. It was hard not to be impressed with his Albany March 3 trial win when displaying a sharp turn of foot to easily dispose of his capable stablemate Zipline. Has the gate speed to fully utilise an inner barrier draw and FAULTY looks a great each-way play. WINGS OF HOPE and SPIN DRIFTER will fight it out for favouritism, with the former going in for second on the strength of recent placings behind highly-regarded pair Royalic and Amelia's Love. SPIN DRIFTER gives us the impression he's looking for six furlongs but we still expect him to be charging home late, while GRAVY is honest and was a bit stiff at Pinjarra last Thursday.

Tips: 5-11-1-2
Suggested Bet: (5) FAULTY each way.

RACE 2 HOUGHTON WINES MAIDEN 1:19 PM (2200M)
The Justin Warwick stable is in rare form and three-year-old filly CHAMPAGNE CHARGER looks set to continue the team's hot streak in this distance maiden. The daughter of Choisir has obvious talent and competed against some of the best fillies in the State in the listed Ascot 1000 Guineas last start. Drops significantly in class here and J.T. Warwick is a freak, especially with staying types. CHAMPAGNE CHARGER to break through. HAKUNA MATATA has done a good job since arriving from Victoria with two second placings from his last three starts. Is a dead-set stayer, so no worries about the journey, and we can't see him missing a place. GAUGED is out of a WA Oaks winner and gives the impression he is screaming out for this longer journey, while PRESS THE PETAL was okay at his Albany debut and you can never discount Adam Durrant-trained stayers.

Tips: 9-1-4-10
Suggested Bet: (9) CHAMPAGNE CHARGER to win.

RACE 3 TABTOUCH MAIDEN 1:54 PM (1400M)
We tipped GATTLING on top here on March 6 when a poor getaway proved costly and we're a forgiving bunch, so we're going to give the Vernon Brockman four-year-old another chance. It was a pretty decent effort under the circumstances to run on and finish fourth and the booking of in-form apprentice Randy Tan is a positive, after he booted home a winning double here on Stakes Day. GATTLING each way. Former Victorian three-year-old PRESUMPTUOUS has put in two cracking efforts at Albany since arriving in WA and we're expecting him to play a major part in the finish of this. BAR COUTURE boxed on well after racing on top of a hot speed at Pinjarra last Thursday and can run a cheeky race at odds, while BORN BLUE has a bit of ability and warrants consideration.

Tips: 3-7-13-4
Suggested Bet: (3) GATTLING each way.

RACE 4 GANNONS HANDICAP 2:34 PM (1200M)
Plenty of winning hopes in this small field and after being taken with the run of TERRORIZE at Ascot last start, we've locked in the David Harrison-trained five-year-old on top. Hit the line nicely after coming from near last on that occasion and he was partnered by Paul Harvey the last time he won, five starts back. 'The Pontiff' is back on here and TERRORIZE gets our nod. NICCATRICE is a super-honest sprinter and is always among the main players in these race types, while LOW FLYING gets 3kg off his back, thanks to Kate Witten's claim, and is capable of sprinting well fresh. UNBRIDLED SPIRIT is the interesting runner and looked sharp enough in a recent Belmont trial.

Tips: 3-2-1-5
Suggested Bet: (3) TERRORIZE to win.

RACE 5 WILLIAM BARRETT HANDICAP 3:04 PM (1000M)
If you haven't seen the Lark Hill March 8 trial win of STIRLING ESTATE then we suggest you take a look, with the unraced four-year-old displaying a brilliant turn of foot to defeat Krakka Vision by 7-1/2 lengths, with that galloper subsequently winning easily here on Stakes Day. This probably isn't the perfect race for STIRLING ESTATE to make his debut, however, trainer James Grieve obviously wanted to 1000-metre event on his home track. As far as trials go, they don't get much better, and if he holds form STIRLING ESTATE just wins. SCOTTY BEAU is a horse with his share of ability and must rate among the main fancies, while BUSTER'S SECRET has been in sizzling form since joining the Robin Elliott yard. TANJIER is a really nice horse, loaded with ability, however the five-furlong journey is a bit short for him.

Tips: 6-2-1-3
Suggested Bet: (6) STIRLING ESTATE to win.

RACE 6 RTW STEEL FABRICATION & CONSTRUCTION HANDICAP 3:35 PM (1675M)
Former eastern stater PRESENT ARMS has shown a bit since arriving in WA last year and he managed to post his first win in his new home state here on March 6, with a dominant victory in a very similar assignment to this. We've liked the way he's stretched out all prep and we're keen on PRESENT ARMS to go back-to-back. STUDIO FIFTY FOUR doesn't know how to run a bad race and drops 2.5kg after placing in Class 3 here last month, while TYCOON TARGET comes out of the same race as PRESENT ARMS and has to rate among the main hopes. GEE PEE ESS ran a cheeky race at Ascot last start and is in career-best form.

Tips: 8-6-4-5
Suggested Bet: (8) PRESENT ARMS each way.

RACE 7 STRATCO BUNBURY HANDICAP 4:10 PM (2200M)
We were keen on the chances of BEG TO DIFFER here on March 6 but he was never really in contention when getting back and running on evenly late. Appeared as though he was looking for more ground and he gets it here, with apprentice Clint Johnston-Porter taking a valuable 1.5kg off his back over the 2200-metre journey. BEG TO DIFFER is an emerging stayer and we're happy to have him on top. MUDLODE has always shown plenty but is finally starting to deliver, with his March 6 win here being full of merit. Hit the line well on that occasion and must rate highly here, while BON SIGNORE comes out of the same race as MUDLODE and is racing well. Three-year-old HIGH SUCCESS will have his share of admirers and gives the impression the 2200 metres will be up his alley.

Tips: 1-4-2-5
Suggested Bet: (1) BEG TO DIFFER each way.

RACE 8 XXXX GOLD BUNBURY CUP 4:45 PM (2200M)
As mentioned earlier, Justin Warwick has his team on point and we're very happy to lock in ANGOLA as our Bunbury Cup pick. The former eastern-stater was convincing when winning the Detonator Stakes on February 20 and then had no luck in the AHA Cup last start, when held up for a run for most of the straight. William Pike won't make the same mistakes again and ANGOLA can give 'The Wizard' back-to-back wins, having piloted Tick Tick Bloom to victory last year. Topweight TOWER OF LONHRO was massive in the AHA Cup, storming home to miss out by a nose. He is the class runner of the race and will take a power of beating, while AHA Cup winner BEDAMIJO has taken things to another level this season and must rate among the best winning chances. Uber-talented stayer KIROV BOY is our smokey after an eye-catching AHA Cup effort. Look out for sharp improvement from him.

Tips: 5-1-2-4
Suggested Bet: (5) ANGOLA each way.

RACE 9 AMELIA PARK HANDICAP 5:25 PM (1400M)
The last is an open affair, however, we feel it is a great option for the Dan Morton-prepared SEALED WITH A KISS. Caught the eye first up at Ascot on February 24 and was thrown in the deep-end against WA Derby class gallopers in listed company last start. Back in class and distance, blinkers go on and SEALED WITH A KISS rates highly. Great Southern filly SENATE BIANCA covered the ground nicely when winning an Albany maiden last start and hometown hero Damian Lane has been booked to ride. Bred to appreciate seven furlongs and she can run a race without surprising, while MY MAGIC MISS is a mare we have a bit of time for and we expect her to improve sharply second up. Consistent topweight WINZA MOMENT is a must for your First Fours, despite the wide alley.

Tips: 5-13-8-1
Suggested Bet: (5) SEALED WITH A KISS each way.
+1 -1

If that is the sports bar at Rogans, across the road from the course @rooboy. You had better get there early as that place will be packed after race 1.

How can the Bunbury Turf Club justify $9.75 a stubbie of beer and $30 entry. Rogans will be packed, as people just won't pay for that when they can go across the road and pay half that and get there choice of drink too. Not just That Hahn shite.

We were planning on taking a 12 seater bus down. Not any more. Entry + 15 Beers + bus Fare = $200 before having a punt. Instead we will sit in my shed and kick of with $1500 in our kitty. After our carton has been taken out.

Only thing we miss out on, is the GIRLS in there $15 Kmart Mini Dresses, high heels and No knickers.

Being St Pats day, no doubt green will be the colour of the day and DMac will be all over it. Something will get up at 50s wearing a green cap and it will be "the omen of the day" no doubt.

Anyway, Im sticking to Already Famous. In my opinion was a great cup trial in the AHA and the distance record sold me. Only worry is Barrier 1, will take a good ride to win and B Patt will have to be at his best.

Its going to be a blanket finish.

Outside of that, interesting runner is Stirling Estate after a 7 length romp at the trials, given Krakka Vision who ran second, came out and put rivals to the sword first up by 3.25L.

Have a great day if out there!

Going back some years ago to the Bunno Cup, it was st paddys day and a few horses wearing the shamrock/green got up. A horse wearing a shamrock won in the cup at a good price i think.

Yellow with a Green Shamrock back in the day I think was Yosse Goldbergs colours, similar Colours used on a few Michael Lane trained horses now.

this cup is a poser, as the market suggests. for u supersticous(sic) people, tonto carries the same #13 as his stablemate, young lionel did in winning the stakes on sunday.

Followed the preview lead of Faulty , but was beaten at the 100, favourite too good in the first. Wolfe stable can win the 2nd though, and the 7 in race three crying out for this trip.

Unbridled Spirit runs about 14 wide on the home turn (in a 7 horse field) yet Noske was still good enough to ride it out and get it over the line... that's how you ride with vigour! and still with enough in the tank to pull up 50 before the post and pose for the photo

i'd happily sling if I owned that winner  ^:)^
