We so desperately need a new track. Horses like Guns With Cows should not be winning on a friday night but as long as you can lift your legs and you don't cop indue pressure if you lead you are home.

Its all to do with pace of the race ..Not size of the track.
It was only a C1-C4 race as well.
Its form been has been around damondo and vanquished!!
Could easily hav been on the winner..

Didn't want to say anything and put the mock on it. Today early on fixed odds Everton VC ...tab was betting $3.70 a place....literally flew out the door to get on! ...when I got there he was $3.50...you guys know I rave on about him! He's just a battler but $3.50 a place from barrier 1 with Flaming Hero almost a good thing to lead and win from the 2 , was a no brainer. Half way up the straight thought the VC was going to get swamped but thank goodness he boxed on. Owe him some carrots and sugar cubes.

I'm not against front runners winning, I actually think it should be an advantage to be in front because by rights you earn the front (although that is coming less and less).

I agree it is tempo related to a point but at the moment we have a track where even very limited potential horses are capable of getting around in the lead in 1.57.4 home 28.8,28.2.

Then in the 2nd they've gone 1.55.8 off a 58.4 first half of the last mile where it was good old, lead, leaders back 3 back the pegs. So what sort of tempo do we need for something from the back to get into it? More so I don't really think that's my point, I don't want to be relying on driver error for something other than the front 3 on the fence and maybe the breeze and the 1,1 horse being the only ones who can run into the money. The way the track is racing if the tempo is slow it seems impossible to put yourself into it, if you go you're just making it for someone else as virtually no horse over the last year has put themselves into the race (other than being handed the lead) and finished off up there. We use to see horses that could lead up the 3 wide line race after race and still be up there but it just never happens now. Wether that is the track or the handicapping, the new carts i'm not sure (think it's all) but the racing as a result is bloody boring.

As I write Simply Susational leads up the 3 wide line and wins, Wooo!!!!! Maybe we just need more stands again so horses are actually handicapped. I grew up during the emergence of J Warwick, J Humphries, G Williams. I regularly remember there horses winning off back marks in stands and there being a bonus of some type per 10m they were back.

I guess i'm just finding the racing so vanilla, at least have Wagin or something similar racing alongside GP for some entertainment.

For what it's worth tonight I have backed.

    R1: Straighttothehilton (win)

    R2: Everton VC (Place)

    R3: I'm Stylish (Win)

    R4: False Promise (Place)

    R5: Vincenzo Peruggia (EW)

R6 Macon Goergia (Very small win bet)

    R8: Ima Tragedy (EW)

    R9: Flyin the ointment (Place).

So everything I've backed (except Straightothehilton although I was expecting a hot early speed) I have put in because I thought it would get the right trip. Like I said I just don't want vanilla racing.

Massive FF race 4, False Promise always a chance to be up there as was going to get that soft on pace pegs run. Took the fixed odds for a place Doh!

Race 2 Clint Hall goes around and gives stable mate cover, applies moderate pressure to the leader, then gets in way of stable mate in the last lap.

Does not always go to plan.

Courage Tells $1.70 a place fixed and $1.90 on the billy goat...for a horse that was going to be driven a treat by Turvey and slot onto the leaders back ..was never in doubt. I know talking after the race but was a legitimate 1.20 chance to run the drum.
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,951 posts
^^ Qualify that by saying after 50 metres was a $1.20 chance to run the drum. Once it was confirmed by handing up to the favourite.

Chicago Bull great drive jnr. Enjoyed watching that one!

Was a gem of a drive. Plenty of $10 around earlier maybe even better ? Worked into a position where was about a $2 pop in the run. Turvey 3 places on Everton VC , Courage Tells and Sprinter all driven the same - leaders back. The good old leaders back at GP it's a happy place to be. ( at least for the place)

Pretty sure there was $12 somewhere. Ability wise that price is massive but as talked about earlier you need to combine that ability with the run which jnr was able to do. Pressure put on by Craven makes it an entertaining race but ultimately sets it up for the inner to run past him.

Last week thought The Art Form was just a run at best. Very short @ $3.40 fixed on that run.

Handicapping is prime culprit in my view .....good placement by trainers to take advantage of the current system means front line draws for 1.04 pops, game over. And I wont rabbit on again about the need for a 900m track at GP. But I also enjoyed Hall's drive on Chicago. It's a good form race the Western Gateway ...won by a lot of horses who have gone on to better things.

Nice of Clint Hall to drop to the fence on the 1st bend to let Junior in.

Probably wouldn't have made any difference but no need to put pressure on The Art Form you can cover him easy enough. Not convinced of him by a longshot. Next run will be very interesting. Early on in his career didn't rate Hall as a driver. (Wrong!!!) might be wrong about The Art Form too. The jury is out.

I was exactly the same RE Hall, eventually realised the big thing that he does is give them their chance. That might sound silly but generally if they are good enough and he is driving them they win.

A very good team player but probably was the best place for Harry Hoo to be anyway.

I've softened on Hall as well.....absolutely didn't rate him, driving far superior horses made him look good etc....but I'd like to think I have an open mind and I think he regularly drives well with some really cluey drives at times. The big stable/teamwork thing still bothers me but ....he can drive very well. Not in my top 10 but credit where it is due.

^^Thought he made some ordinary moves in races too many times...over aggressive, and a one trick pony..over time he has proved to be the opposite in many ways...has controlled aggression , confident and daring drives too.

2 really patient drives last night on Chicago Bull and Lettuceriprita, kept his powder dry to the very  last, and why not with Sprinter locked up for as long as possible ...very nice work. Got to say ...as he removes foot from mouth.....having bagged the leaders bias/boring nature of the racing, thought the last 4 races were really good...Major Reality is some talent, 9 in a row and last to first and bolted in, great battle from the back with Tosti Mac and Shirlz's. Had Major Reality drawn 1 or 2 however, it would have been a snooze and no way would you have seen $1.60.

^^ No comparison between Bonny Under Fire and Major Reality. Bonny came back to the field last night. She's done well but a $1.10 a place...ouch.

Agree JJ Jnr is much more patient and driving with great judgement. By daring...meant daring with patience if that makes sense! Has got horses into wins and placings with good peg driving too which was a rarity earlier in his career when it was more a case of attack attack attack. Does have the cattle but compliments that too.

Go have a look at the drive on Lettuceriprita last week, went for home way no early, only had to sit up down the back and wins.

^^ Fair call. Doesn't matter if Lewis , Hall , Pike , Oliver...for all the great drives and rides..there will be some average ones sneak through. Consistency is the key. Even Bradman made a duck in his final innings.
