Last Saturday night first race at Albion Park Unitab guaranteed a trifecta pool of two hundred thousand dollars. Meaning if the pool got up to say $190000 they foot the other $10000. As it turned out the final pool got to $248400. They didn't have to put in a cent. Point to make is...what a great idea...you guarantee $200000 and the punters come out in droves to invest. Doesn't mean the trifecta is going to pay any more or less but it does enable if you wish to be able to take 10,20,50 times and not be 'killing' the dividend. Previously they were guaranteeing around 10k...they took that to a new level of 200k and the punters came through with flying colours.
There is no carryover money or anything like that...it's simple we guarantee punters a pool of 200k if it reaches 150k we put in the other 50k...guess what they very very rarely have to put in! It's the best kept secret to increasing turnover. The proof is in the pudding...guarantee $200k get over $248k and Unitab takes its 20%...it's clever , it's punter incentive, it's a no brainer.

Interesting today that TAB.COM.AU still aren`t capable of tote betting on race 13 at the Sunshine Coast.

TABTouch and Unitab had tote betting on the race.

The leading TAB in AUS  can`t accommodate a 13th race or a race with more than 24 runners.

All I heard was the commentator say was there is a guaranteed pool of $200000 on the first race...didn't mention anything about the 50k jackpot. Interesting. It did seem a lot to guarantee. They seem to do it well anyway and use it effectively.

Your right Tony just looked it up...50k Jackpot and then they guaranteed 200k. They've been doing the 10k guarantees for a while now...that's why was shocked when heard 200k guarantee...but bolstered by 50k jackpot. Knew a punter who would only bet on jackpot races nothing else.

    Definitely a $50k jackpot.

That would be the catalyst to turnover aided by the guaranteed pool.

At 20% on the $198,000 (jackpot not subject to commission) good business for Unitab creating $39,600 in commission.

Reasonable deal for punters as well as Unitab would have paid out $208,800 against the investment of $198,000.

To be honest I can't see just a guaranteed pool creating the same interest

Guaranteed pools are just like dangling the bait...they need to set it at the right amount where confident they won't have to put any money in or very little...but a big enough guarantee to entice punters to invest. Thereby enabling the total to be reached. Or go way beyond. Think it's a good strategy. ( For punters and especially Unitab )

That race 200k race looked a great leader , leaders back race...1,8 1,8..(two favourites) and was going along perfectly...except the horse that went three back the pegs (the 9) driven by premier reinsman Grant Dixon ended up beating both of them via the sprint lane.

Guaranteed pools without jackpots are no enticement to the punter as the full amount is subject to commission.

For example lets say $180,000 is invested and the TAB puts in $20,000 to make up the $200,000.

Commission is $40,000 so $160,000 is paid out against the investment of $180,000. Still a better deal than normal but no free kick for punters.

Have mentioned this to the powers to be approx. 5yrs  ago.For the life of me  can't believe why w.a. tab hasn't run a solid two months advertising  campaign   Australia wide    of      THERE UNIQUE  FAVOURITE NUMBERS GAME CONCEPT.Then  third month  guaranteed pool of 250,000 for start ers as it is   25%  takeout for tab hopefully some of it gets back to industry,as of now the turnover is ap prox.7,000,000 per year sat and wed games included,  there cut 1,750,000aprox per year ,believe pool size could easily reach 500,000 per weekend in time, which would return approx.  6,500,000 per year.,Very appealing game to old folk once they understand how it operates.Personally had same numbers since its inception seems like a  life time ago.

Apparently NSW Tab were very interested in joining Favourite Numbers about a decade ago ? Came within a whisker but declined.

Now this is only second hand...but heard at the time part of the reason NSW declined was because they were a bit frightened of the pools getting up too high and if it hit the one to two million dollar vicinity or more possibly lent itself to something dodgy happening in a race if there was a massive pool and or kept jackpoting. Especially if the final number coming up meant a million dollar dividend and that it may cause some skullduggery happening. Seems surprising though especially when you look at the size of Hong Kong pools. But was about 8 to 10 years ago when heard this.

25% takeout rate is a bit steep. When takeout rates go over 20% their becoming uncompetitive. Think all Tabs need to have a really good look at takeout rates and where there going. (Unfortunately mostly up ).

Favourite numbers were definitely being rorted in the 1980s I think it was when small pools on country trots on Saturday nights (the last of the numbers) were being manipulated to make sure that there was no more numbers come in.

Led to the TAB only having favourite numbers on meetings with significant pools.

Very difficult to manipulate pools on mainstream thoroughbred meeting given the size of pools and then making something favourite that can't win.

Agree that the 25% takeout is steep but it is a lotto type product and compares more than favourably with that and any profits go into the racing industry through distribution.
