The $50k Pinjarra Cup field looks better than okay.....almost zero promotion of the event that I have seen....in stark contrast to the great build up for the Country Cups circuit in Victoria, ours seem to be a national secret.
Time honored race with past winners including Sultana Pop Johnson(1958), Eaton Hall Leo keys (1964), Fortress Rod Starkie (1969), Gallant Ribbon Ray Grantham (1970), No Dill George James 1971, Forbes Adios Bernie Cushing 1972, Wee cent Lyle Lindau 1974, Johnny Toledo Jim Schrader 1977,Windy Jean Ray Grantham 1978 Artisan Kevin Batt 1979, Pallaton Chris Lewis 1980, Mint Condition Lyle Lindau 1981, Butterfly Trunkey John Graham 1984 (the first $10k Cup), Lincoln Storm Trevor Warwick in 1986 and 1987, Prince Palladin for George and G.D.Harper in 1990,Souther Knight Boof Anderson 1994, Allwoods Chief Justin Warwick 1997, Tabaret Greg Kersley1998, Talladega Chris Lewis 2001, Shardons Aflyin Grant Williams 2006 (the first $20k Cup), Mr Yankee Ryan Bell 2008 (the first $30k Cup), Precious Dylan Grant Williams 2010, Ima Rocket Star Colin Brown 2013 (the first $40k Cup) and I'm The Mighty Quinn Gary Hall Jnr 2014 (the first $50k cup) with David Hercules and Tricky Styx rounding out the last two years. Hats off to the Pinjarra Club for building the profile of this race with an honor roll of great quality.
This years PBD $50k race has up and comers Master Jaxon from gate 1, Cut For An Ace (2), Better Reward (5), American Boy from inside the second line (8), I'm Full of Excuses chasing a 4th Country Cup this season (10) good ol Shardons Rocket having start number 3,504 from 11 and the star of the show Our Jimmy Johnson from outside the second row(12). Stayers distance of 2700m....well worth heading on course for a look. Hope its not too hot.

Coolup Way was bred by Harry Bele, being by his great non public stallion Admiral Way out of prolific broodmare Wilvetta (who won the Great Southern Derby and a Kellerberrin Cup), dam of Placid Way, Each Way etc (6 others as well) ...all $100k plus earners in the 70's. and all trained and driven by Laurie Robinson. Tough and durable and could produce a whirlwind finish like few others. Stormed home from last to win a Pacing Cup heat one night at rich odds, and after reaching fast class, went to the USA where he raced successfully for years.
Wayamba was a big strong Trainer Hanover horse that Ray Sweetman got over from Victoria where he was palced 3rd in the 1973 Vic Sires produce to Bay Chapel. He was a good Free For All horse that won the Bunbury Cup in 1976 and ran 3rd to Young Robbie in the 1976 Easter Cup and 3rd to Aboukir in the 1976 Brennan Cup.
Thor Rise was a Thor Hanover import from NSW, a sub 2 minute horse with $139k in stakes that won the 1978 Easter Cup over 2 miles and I think he ended up in the USA.
Flashing Star was from pacing royalty by Northern Lights from the Romeo Hanover mare Summer Honey and was a brother to Hilarion Star, Sassie Brassy et al from an incredible breeding line harking back to the afire mentioned Admiral Way....pedigree littered with black type, Shelly Lee and dozens of other high quality winners. $350k in stakes from 23 wins, 32 placings in only the best of company for the Col Cummins/Lewis (primarily) combination (although others such as Lou Austin also won on him, in Austins case a Pacing Cup prleude. Won as a 2yo, 2nd to Chandon in the Sales Classic, won the 3YO Triple Crown, the Western Gateway Pace, the Sires Produce, the Golden Nugget, the Mt Eden Sprint, FFA's and heats of the Pacing Cup and placed behind Norms Daughter and Mon Poppy Day in races like the 4YO Championship, the Mt Eden Mile and the FTC Flying Mile. His "patch of form" lasted for several years but ultimately ended up running around fairly unsuccessfully in SA claimers at Globe Derby Park. He ran a close 5th to Golden Reign at Moonee Valley in the Australian Derby, the same year that Chandon ran last, at his only venture east when trained by Cummins.

Im pretty sure the late Barry Alford - Chris father trained it - or was it GA Lang - it was one of the 2 - it was just a horse in Vic - but improved out of sight when it came West . I think under Warwick it might have even won a Hunter Cup - or run 2nd

He started racing in outer country tracks for Ken Smith in 1993, and was later taken over by Barry Alford and Gavan Lang. He won 10 of his first 18 starts but won nothing, winning at Young, Wagga, Cowra, Canberra, Leeton, Cootamundra, Eugowra etc but he did run 4th to Golden Reign in the 3YO Sires Final at MV. He picked up a few more wins, a prelude of the 4YO Sires stakes for G.Lang. He then appeared in SA, 8 starts, no wins 4 placings for ribbons and hot dog vouchers but disappeared for 28 months - from June 11 1994 until March 26 1996. He resumed for 1 win, 1 place and 8 unplaced runs before going back to SA for 1 win, 1 placing and 6 unplaced runs, his last run being on August 17, 1996. He then headed West with a record of 75 starts for 16 wins, 23 places and a workman like $61,970 after 3 seasons of fairly moderate racing. In his first season in WA starting October 11, 1996, he progressed to open class with 11 wins, 11 places and just 5 unplaced runs winning FFA's and the 1997 August Cup. After winning at GP November 1997, he slipped over to MV, won the $40k Legends Mile and slipped back home the next week to win at GP again. He finished 3rd to Our Sir Vancelot in the Pacing Cup, took in the Hobart Inters with a 2nd in a heat, ran 6th in the Vic Cup, 5th in the Hunter Cup, 4th in the APC at Newcastle, having won a prelude of the Pacing Cup, the Harvey Cup and the Stratton Cup before that. He took out the Easter Cup in April 1998 and won the $50k Celebrity mile leading into the 1998 Pacing Cup. He ran 2nd to Ted Barry in the Freo Cup and 3rd to Saab in that famous Pacing Cup where the ability to swim was an asset. He then went east, running last in the Hunter Cup to Paris Affair, came home, won a 2nd Harvey Cup and won a couple more FFA's through the season. 11th to Admirals Avenue in the 2000 Pacing Cup, 10th to Golden Gears in the Freo Cup followed along with 3 minor wins , 10 placings but also 10 unplaced runs. His last win was May 12 2000, a $14.5k FFA at GP. From October 2000 to June 2002, he never raced but reappeared for 4 runs in Country Victoria, all unplaced before he was retired. For Warwick, he had 82 starts, 24 wins, 19 placings and very nearly $400k in stakes. Amazing improvement for this horse once he found some sunshine way out west.Final record was 161 starts, 40 wins, 49 places, $466k and a 1.54.4 life time record....and he had nearly 4 years away from racing.

The only thing i will say ( re the vast improvement when he came to WA ) was like you say - he did run 3rd to Golden Reign in a 3yo Sires Final - and won a 4yo Sire Prelude - there was some talent there - he was a sit sprinter - and looked to be a promising young horse - but then just lost form for about 3 years
Won 400k under Warwicks care - incredible - and as you have outlined - a very impressive racing record in the West

Paavo was one who looked like being anything as a juvenile (won about his first dozen races from memory) but I think he may have been struck down by injury just as he made fast class company?
