West Australian Racing
HopesandDreamsHopesandDreams    24 posts
Have sat back and watched most of the Sky World Racing
Great coverage but I must say cannot understand the dress standard of some of the traIners and onwers,
Michael Grant looks as he just come straight from night club. No ties or suits is it there no dressed code in WA
Did see couple well dressed Harrison and Harvey how hard on a big race day to present your self well attired

Just

Totally agree with your comments. Watched the winterbotton interviews and here is the trainer in an open neck shirt and the strapper dressed very ordinary with a bloody cap perched on his head. Watch the races in the east and the trainers all wear suits and the strappers are all neatly dressed. It's called professionalism == something that is definitely missing in WA.
  • Strappers were given those caps - they were burswood ones and had to wear them

With mid thirty degree temperatures it would be ridiculous to insist on trainers wearing suits

As much as I love to wear a suit and tie I can fully support dressing for comfort on a very hot day. Smart open neck shirts are okay. Quite common to see politicians and TV folk with open neck shirts these days.

Saw a photo of a guy in the paper leading a horse in last week. Polo shirt, not tucked in...thought there were strict dress codes for the mounting yard.
The members floor insist on tucked in shirts yet trainers and some owners can look like bloody gypsies. I dunno this whole PR thing has me mystified....

I can't recall many trainers yesterday not in full suits

It's quite simple, most West Australian's dress likes slobs. Perth isn't really a city, just a big country town.

Speak for yourself KB. When I strap one in Perth I'll suit up. Could be soon big boy.
  • a few years ago I saw a jockey on Perth Cup day arrive at the races in t shirt, denim shorts and thongs, and he had a ride in the cup

I'm talking about the majority of people in this state of ours.
West Aussies don't like change, and that's including fashion.
I was at the spring carnival. I must of been the only male not to wear a suit. I didn't wear a suit as my neck had got too fat, so i was unable to wear a tie.
I was at Ascot yesterday, id say about 1/4 of the men wore shorts and thongs. Don't blame the weather, as i've been to last years Derby and the previous Caulfield Cup, and they still wore suits.
    West Australian's = Bogans.

I have the same problem.. but not the tie... with the Zipper in my pants. 8)

I've seen our leading trainer at Pinjarra in ripped jeans, daggy Tshirt and scuffs...he had horses racing...
The stewards should insist at least slacks and a collared shirt from trainers.
I think it was the owner of Black Felix who had a polo on leading the horse back, not tucked in. Should not have been allowed in the yard!!!!
On a wet wed. at belmont i was refused entrance to yard cos I had a pair of jeans on..must admit I thought i'd get away with it. I didn't!!!!

wa isn't the only place. have a look at melbourne for example some of the attire (with a few exceptions) at sandown at the midweeks is atrocious. and this is supposed to be in our premier racing state. if you did that in sydney they wouldn't let you in the yard. strappers aren't even allowed to wear shorts when its 40c in town.

What about a trainer or strapper in the mounting yard who looks scruffy and his horse looks the same?

Melb and Perth have one thing in common - both 35 degrees
    Melbourne 35F
    Perth 35C !!!

    Hi Blake,
You can't compare a midweek Sandown meeting to the Winterbottom meeting.
When most of the girls walked past me at Ascot, i felt like giving them $20. The guys think tough stickers and looking like a gangster is the way to dress for our summer carnival. You can't buy class at a supermarket. Oh, that's right. We can't do that on a Sunday.
  • cubescubes    689 posts
Since when did wearing a suit and tie give you class.

Couldnt say that at the last 15 Melbourne Cups, Victoria Derby days. Lootta 'class' on exhibition on those days and they wear suits.

    What a load of cr@p.

Still don't recall seeing anyone in the mounting yard not dressed appropriately............
  • have a look on any Sat and you will see someone, the dress standards are there in the book, 1 example I see are people in the enclosure with their shirts out every week, might look fashionable, BUT its not the so called dress requirements. Its a rule that some get away with and some dont.

Melbourne people like me who moved to Perth, find Perth can be pretty hot in WARM months until common sense prevails. Living in Melbourne though in COLDER months is a no brainer. A lifetime of waking up to ice on the grass, day after day cured me of Melbourne in the colder months. Trousers with a crease and white collared shirt is ideal at races in Perth in Summer months.

Would you let them keep the change :?:
  • Tailored Trousres, Collared shirts, must be tucked in.

Tivers where have you been looking, surely not the mounting yard
  • anyway its mainly the bushies ( lark hill ) who dont dress up to scratch, Ascot trainers dress like models

    Was where I was (R3 & 7)
Sea of suits to my eye.

Might be time for some (me) to become "one of them" and start kicking up if I do see any as such, because I've certainly never been allowed in with so much as an untucked shirt.

There are probably a few that do. I know a trainer who tried to lose some weight... went to Jenny Craig's and lost............. $1600
