@rio Aren't they talking about loosening the lock out laws? In any case if there is enough ground swell of support a law can always be repealed. I see the ALP are already using the greyhounds for political mileage.

yeah aint that sad TRK....About the opposition screwing it down for mileage....And in the future anything can happen......I'm just staggered about a government in Aus doing this to a industry in this manner......I'd seriously feel the same if it was Sheep dog trials or the car industry.

Time to adjust and exit in an orderly manner is so important for people who have invested their live in an industry.. So unfair.

I'll never deny that the NSW Greyhound industry is reaping what it has sown over many years. Corruption and unethical behaviour, by officials and all level of participants. But i just cant get my head around this decision, to destroy so many people, due to the actions of so few.

What I am hearing is that the legal outcome will undoubtedly find the McHugh Report flawed.

But because Baird/Grant introduced the legislation through the Upper House first and then the Lower House that finding will not stop the ban taking effect on July 1. 2017

The findings will however add further pressure for some concessions to be granted and this could extend to breeding, rearing and education still being allowed for an additional period.

The industry will most likely not be allowed to conduct racing for 12 months but should Labor be successful at the next election in March 2019 then the legislation will be repealed.

The groundswell against the Lib/Nat government is likely to be that strong that Labor will be swept into power with a clear majority.

Of course Baird's decision will undergo much scrutiny meanwhile including ICAC investigation involving Wentworth Park and deals done with the Greens and AJP.

It's the dogs v the infrastructure. I know the greyhounds is an emotive issue but this govt isn't going anywhere. They have public transport projects planned into the foreseeable future and you can bet they will campaign on that issue. It affects everyone in the state, every day. The ALP had years to do something abt it and they did nought. That will stop them being re-elected. I live here and I am loath to support the libs but I can't criticise what they are doing on the infastructure front. I mean ppl wouldn't even trust the ALP to build the NBN even though it made far more sense into the future.

Don't start me on the NBN...
Biggest waste of money in history.

Billions of dollars for what ?
So people can download illegally pirated movies quicker ?

That's Rupert's take on it because he is **** scared of Netflix upsetting his baby, Foxtel. A lot of jobs in the future won't necessarily be office ones. The ability to work from home as well as e-health possibilities would create far more wealth than the cost of building it. But we are stuck with copper instead of cable. It's a disgrace and it shouldn't be divided along party lines.

cable will be obsolete in the not too distant future IMHO

My experience with wifi is that it's inferior for streaming and the comments following that article raise the same problems that current wifi has.

    Article is from 2013.

    Technology flies along TRK @-)

In my time to ring Kalgoorlie from Perth you had to book a call with the operator and she would plug a few cords in at the exchange to make it happen
    Now you can take an object out of your pocket the size of which fits in the palm of your hand - press a few buttons and talk to someone in the US.  If you had said that was going to be possible not so many years ago you probably would have been committed 8-}

Only 12-18 months ago they were saying that storing solar generated power in batteries domestically was 8-10 or so years away.
I heard an add on the radio in my car this morning advertising Solar Systems for home with Tesla?? battery storage. Seems it is already here

I  think within 10 years some genius will come up with a suitable wifi system and cable will be obsolete

Battery storage for a standard home is just a touch over $10k to have installed with existing panels. By the end of 2017, it'll be just under $10k with panels.....Our little farm has power poled to it already. But if the poles fall over or need replacing, that is the way we will be going.. totally off grid

wait til the quantum computers are running and the satellites like the one the chinese and austria just launched , the difficulty being they exist but we don't fully understand their capabilities or how it actually works yet to be able to reach it's full potential
then there's IoT which just about everything can be monitored or controlled via your internet or phone

How the fuck did a thread about a long running industry being shut down end up in some bullshit conversation on Internet coverage? I don't think anyone here realises what has happened. Sure. Be indifferent that it is NSW or a code that you don't care for. But they will be pumped up by it. You think the Melbourne Cup protests of late were bad? Just wait. They won't stop at dogs. It's all on the table now. The lack of action from the other states and the horse codes has been perplexing. Dig your own grave I suppose.

I care about it and I am disappointed that the horse codes have stayed silent in support (mind you in NSW they are bitter enemies because of the Intercode Agreement). All of the horse industry need to be on notice. Don't worry the greyhound code in all states are.

I hear you G-Mac....every animal activity is under notice......they wont stop now they have had success. Why in the world the horse racing industries haven't came out in some sort of support is a bit of a mystery. I can only assume that they were worried about drawing attention to their industries.

Its an epidemic in Aus - maybe the democratic world who knows - at the moment. The minorities are shaping the way we think, act and legislate. this is a fundamental error in the way we go about life. Minorities are to be heard, understood and compromises sought to take up as many of their concerns as possible....but not at the expense of effecting the majority of people by the changes.

Until we get back to being a democratically run country, these sort of things will continue to happen in all activities in our lives..the ball-less, gutless people elected by the majority of voters are letting our nation day...And that transcends into racing boards in every code, not supporting the majority of participants of their codes. If all codes dont fight hard now, then in my lifetime there is a chance that most racing codes will no longer exist or only exist for the very elite on a greatly reduced scale to now....

I've not read one press release condemning the NSW situation by WAROA, PRacing, RWWA, Greyhounds WA, etc, etc...If there is no united fight against these heavily funded animal rights farkwits, they will wear industries down one club at a time until there is nothing left.

this is probably a naïve question but could the federal govt. step in?

    Definitely a state issue Falcon.

Apparently Turnbull had a go at Baird over the ban but Baird was unmoved.

@rio The Greens have even less influence now than previously. Both sides of politics refused to deal with them after the last election, even in the event of a hung parliament. That's a lot different to Gillard when she brokered the deal with the Greens & Independents which saw the Carbon Tax introduced. She and Labor never recovered from that supposed breach of trust and they won't make that mistake twice. The trend may have been towards the minority parties winning support in the Senate but I expect that to be revresed in the future in light of the ensuing chaos it has delivered. Off shore detention has bipartisan support and the CT is history. These are areas where the Greens would like to flex their muscle and the fact they can't negates any meaningful influence they may aspire to.

greens should stay where they belong..in salads, not the effing senate!! X(

With VIC and SA still sticking with jumps racing I dont think those two states would be rushing to ban the dogs

Is Dennis Denuto representing the industry? The "vibe" argument would definitely have legs here.

Four and a half somersaults with double twist and pike.......an uncharacteristically risky and ultimately, stupid call from Mr Baird. When you climb the mountain of moral high ground and flog the entire fraternity for the actions of some disreputable turds, its very lonely at the peak. He backed himself into a corner using very emotive language and declared his position to be non-negotiable....much like Mr Rudd's "the greatest moral issue facing humanity" call....and now, with National party and community unrest threatening Mr Popular's position, whoosh, off the high board he goes and attempts the impossible back flip but lands a huge bellyflop. His credibility is very damaged and it need not have been so.
