Profitable Punting Errors

West Australian Racing
Yesterday I made an error when placing a bet via my Tablet. I never use the phone and I much prefer using the PC. After cursing my Tablet I was very pleased a short time later when the error won me $600.

Others must have stories related to this scenario.

an error almost won me a small fortune but I cancelled the ticket after putting it thru the machine.

I was at Ascot on Melb Cup day (the year American won) and the bet was $60 win on Grand Jardin...................................... I remember looking at the ticket and going "do I keep it?" and decided to cancel.

Farkin thing $hits in an a price I don't want to remember

the moral of my story is - if I make a mistake I usually cop it in the A pipe

1, 7 and 11...this is from 50 years ago when you went to the tote window and told the operator your bet. "$2 the quinella (50 cent units) on 1 and 11 please"? says young JayJay..  pockets the ticket, cheers home number 1, curses number 7 for cutting him out.....furtive glance at the ticket prior to binning it ...hang on ...ticket reads 1 and 7 ....you bewdy. Cannot remember the name of the 1 or 11 horse but Number 7 Presto Prince M.E.(Mick) Taylor forever implanted in the memory bank. 66/1, quinella paid $207 (times 4)...now that (in those days) was a result. First and only time.

Rushed into Gloucester Park to get onto one that I'd been told during the week was a shu in for a place...early 80's and threw all i had onto it..33 places, not a dollar on the win. Comes in and pays $11+ for a win and $2.80 the place........walk up to collect my winnings, feeling pretty chuffed to be doubling my spending money for the week, when they start counting out the 50's. I'd accidentally put 33 wins on.....Straight to the beau rivage room for a feed and **** up!!!!!

The story goes deeper than that. I had Kempys son on my right saying "never cancel a ticket" and i thought "wtf does he know" so i cancelled it. Dont forget it was Melb Cup day so lines were big, it was easier just to keep the ticket than line up again.... But no.

Come super saturday that year, another mate reckons "read the stewards report on grand jardin". Something about the trainer after its last win anticipating further improvement. I just couldn't back it, too painful. Alas, it wins again.

That horse is forever etched in my memory.

Backed Rodean a few starts after she 'won' the Blue Diamond. Had $300 for what i thought was a win. As she ran into third place I looked down at my ticket and noticed I'd backed it for a place instead. Ended up paying 2.70 so it was a welcome $500 'mistake'. I suppose I would have been livid if she'd won but I'll take it.

Not really an punting error, more a human error. A reasonably high ranking banking mate of mine who earns a **** load had his first time to the races about 5 or 6 years ago to pinjarra. He done the usual, how do i fill a ticket in, whats a trifecta etc. And a mutual friend of mine in our group casually says he has a runner in race 5. Good enough for him so with new found confidence he places his first bet on his own. Shows it to me on his return. $100 wins on the horse. So i look up to have a look $88 the win $15 the place on the tote...... Gets up by 2 lengths. Now here is the kicker. This guy was so happy to have won $880. Over the moon he was. Having never collect a ticket before, he leans over and says "can you collect this ticket for me, i dont know what to do" ...................Tick tick tick... I handed it all over.

Checks and balances in the banking industry are total bs. I once had $2500 withdrawn from my account by someone in another state simply because the wrong account details were entered. One glance at the account name and account number would have been all it took. I didn't even get an apology and I had to detect the mistake myself. [-(

probably one of my biggest wins I've missed out on when I cancelled a ticket was in 2006 when El Segundo won the Underwood, I had field field for second and third in a trifecta, keeping in mind this was before flexi betting, half a unit would have cost me a bit over $200 so I cancelled the ticket and trimmed up the second leg and had field for third to spend only 100 odd

El Segundo won, Polar Bear ran second at 50/1 and another roughie paid similar running third and the trifecta pays close to 12 grand, worse thing was that I had more than enough on me to pay for the bet at the time

got a good collect 4 years later though and I didn't miss this one.

in 2010 on Saturday arvo in the last at Belmont I boxed up majority of the FD in a quartet, had no idea on the form on race so it was a rushed bet, spent $110 for a small % and Vizard won the race with Hayley Deiner riding @ 20/1 and 3 other roughies filled the placings (Fleming Son an odds on fav ran near last and the quartet paid 113k

Pennies and sixpences ...now your talking my language. My first ever collect was at the Bentley TAB next to the Boomerang Hotel...funnily enough, there was an SP shop behind "Joe" the Barbers"...you had alternatives in those days...conned the manager (Trevor) into accepting my 10 shillings (2 units) a place on Yamagee (D.C Harper) and it ran 3rd and paid 5 Pounds 11 and sixpence the place. How long has this easy caper being going on thinks about a an 11 year old JayJay, money for jam this betting caper. And folks, therin lies the story of life haha. Not in the same league as some results on here but I did buy a new pair of shoes with change left over to splash out at the school tuckshop. Glory days.

one of my many bad experiences...had a tri and q/tet on a middle distance race, DRM rode the winner.."whisky" something. ron franklin, who ran 4th protested against DRM..it was upheld. was gutted.

punting is a mugs  game, we all must agree to that. I used to be quite a mid-range punter...100 or 200 e/w when I used to bet "on the nod". always settled on time but the penny dropped, thought "this cannot go on" so cut my punting right back...now a max. of 50 e/w, maybe 100-200 if I really like the horse...not on every race, maybe now and again.
if you really want to know some mind blowing wins ask me about the dot com boom but I've forgotten most of them as there were so many.
i'm not THAT old, hash, all of my punting was in dollars...
    ;)
just punt within your means..treat it as a hobby, not a means to wealth or you'll finish up like our old mate, doing time.
  • thefalconthefalcon    20,486 posts
jay, i'll tell a trot story...I am NOT a trotting punter....except....one summers night, when the trots were on sat. night, had a s*it of a day at the track and somehow got conned into going to GP. far too many beers and a chico roll for dinner and endeavoured to "get it back". got further into the red .things were grim.....lucky told me a certain horse was a "cert"...it was even money, I think jack retzlaff drove it. I had 2 grand on it with a bookie that will be unnamed....he said the only reason he let me on was because he knew my dad and the money would be OK.
the horse absolutely bolted in..won by the length of the straight.
woke up next morning in a sweat, fair dinkum was shivering with remorse....I won just under 100 bucks on the day.
if it lost the car would have had to go and would have been in the s*it with the old man.
i'll tell the story about the old man and the horse he had with Bill Page...later.

^^^ that's a true punters story right there!
never give in spirit, always have confidence, chase your losses haha.. I'm glad it worked out for you falc.. I've done similar things and the result has gone my way I'd say 50% of the time and when it doesn't those are the days you can easily walk away and not even think about having another punt.... Until the next pay cheque clears :))

So much misspent youth in the Boomerang back room, playing pool, and runnign around to the TAB!!! Woke up early one Sunday morning in the ball room restaurant, had to wait for staff to arrive to let me out. Was in no condition to take advantage of a few hours at the bar with no one there!!!!

Yep Sonny, remember it well. Hope he had good security and Machine Gun towers. The 'boomer" was a bloodhouse in its day ..very lively on a Friday Night. I remember when a bloke got his ear bitten off one night in the Public Bar.....lively little suburb was Bentley. As a very small kid, I used to bag up manure from local horse stables in Bedford Street for pocket money....bought my first Malvern Star bicycle from my initial work in a stable...and its been downhill ever since haha. Nah, not really, wouldn't change a single thing...I just lament at the lack of characters around these days....rogues and villains were part of a much gentler and funnier landscape  ...I reckon if Arthur Daley and Terry had lived in Wa, Bentley would have been their prime hang out.
