Picked up the latest TABForm this morning and what a let down.
Same price - poorer quality.
Format is less readable, Sunday's racing (apart form Pinjarra) has disappeared, no form comments for lesser meetings, can't find the photo finishes from previous meetings and so on. No doubt they were hoping we would all drool over the new giddy-up feature.
My suggestion - go back to old format and charge more or simply don't bother.
What was once the best Australian wide form guide in the country, is now just an also run.

Good afternoon,
I am a home delivery subscriber to the West (in
Manjimup), and organisations claim they like feedback, so here is my
throw at the stumps.
Firstly, I acknowledge that Gloucester Park
and Harness racing no longer holds the place it once did in the sporting
heirachy....no argument. However, it still attracts a lot of patronage,
especially to big nights, has high TAB turnover and employs thousands
of industry participants, many more than other sports that receive vast
coverage in your paper. The lack of recognition for Chris Lewis's
amazing achievement of driving his 5000th winner, one of only 3 in
Australia to do see, was in my view absolutely insulting, to both him
and the Industry. A 4 line, 20 odd word mini paragraph at the tail end
of a story on thorough bread racing was extremely disappointing. This is
in keeping with the West's very diminished coverage of Harness Racing
in general but I thought an exception may have been made.
Similarly,
to not even have a form guide and fields listed in the racing segment
on Saturday for the Northam Pacing Cup was equally astonishing. Why the
guide is prepared to promote race fields and turnover on race meetings
in provincial Victoria or NSW and completely ignore, on this weekend,
both Busselton and Northam is beyond my understanding. The Busselton
holiday carnival draws large crowds and creates great interest yet to
read the West, you would not have known the event was on. Ditto the
time honored Northam Cup won by so many champions of the past.
The
Friday night guide printed in each Friday edition, with Ernie Manning's
tips and the excellent information from Trent Cooper is ...shall I say
was...very good ....until the guide adopted the ridiculous and
completely off the beam Giddy Up guide, comment and prices. To say that
Giddy Up doesn't even come close with its puerile, disingenuous "prefer
others" or each way chance....which it provided for a horse priced at
$1.45 the other day....along with suggested prices that don't come
within light years of actual starting prices...is truly an
understatement. I believe they are Eastern states based, I also believe
them to be clearly so far off the mark as to be completely useless.
Let me illustrate with some of there pricing from the Magic Millions meeting at the Gold Coast on Saturday:
Race 1 Ajani Price: $41 Paid $10.50
Race 4 Stratum Star $10 Paid $3.30
Race 5 Private Secretary $21 Paid $4.80
Race 7 Flying Jess $151 Paid $63
Race 9 Target In Sight $17 Paid $8.60
Amongst
those that fancy a punt, they are an absolute joke, not just my
opinion, go to the Perth Turf Talk forum and read the comments on Giddy
Up Garbage. Similar downgrading of TAB Form has also been heavily
criticised on this forum, the removal of turn and finish photographs,
disappearance of gear changes and completely point less form guide
comments.
I am probably dreaming that the days of personal
interest stories on Harness racing by the likes of Gino De Mori or the
peerless John McGrath, accompanied by photographs by Barry Baker, or
even some articles and photographs in the Saturday edition of the West
covering important night, rather than results hidden in way in tiny
print amongst a plethora of other results from Timbuktoo to Tonapar ,
are long gone...and that this email will probably have no outcome on
future coverage. However, I do feel that Chris Lewis deserved far better
treatment than he received. There are eminent trotting historians such
as Alan Parker or Ken Casellas....I 'd even have a throw at the stumps
if you asked...gratis.....who could provide you with all the detail
required and I am sure that Ernie Manning, one of the nicest blokes who
ever drew breath, would gladly welcome their input. It's not too late
you know...the West Magazine maybe.
Anyway, thank you for taking the time to read my email, I hope for improved outcomes in the future.
