dunno if it's as relevant or not but QLD are going ahead and will be extending the amount of meeting they have under lights to due recent success and/or popularity....

my point being, every state NSW (cantebury) VIC (mooney valley) QLD (Toowoomba) TAS (Launceston) all have frequent night meetings yet WA cant keep up in that regard!

there'd be nothing more popular than a Friday or Saturday night meeting in Perth for thoroughbreds, all you need to do is take a look at the crowds GP can still pull on half decent nights when the trots are on to tell yourself that WA needs night racing, whats the worse that can currently happen in a dying local industry

Im sure night racing would boost attendances here in WA but would the time difference have a detrimental effect on turnover with the eastern states being 3hrs ahead during the warmer months? Nothing wrong with early twilight races though. 4-8pm or something similar

What we may drop from eastern states turnover we would make up in turnover from Singapore if we race on Friday nights.

night racing needs to happen now its a no brainer. the industry has become a lot more sensitive to animal welfare such that the heat is a real issue racing during the middle of the day.
Add to that the reduction in crowd numbers.. the night racing just might be the spark the industry needs.

I have a genuine concern in respect to night racing, as I don't think the administrators of our great sport could find their ****'s in the dark, let alone Ascot racecourse.

Previously it would have been way past the old committees bed time. Not sure if much has changed.

Night racing is the way to go. And stick with the Cranbourne/MV/Canterbury model of 30min intervals. Make sure there is plenty of action! Get all the races run before 9.30 so it gives people the "kick on" option.

Friday night at Ascot, sounds good.

Transportation from the city's train and bus stations from 4pm for a 6pm first race. 30 minute intervals for a 7 race card, with the last at 9pm. Punters offered everything from casual beer gardens with entertainment between races, food truck dining from local businesses, for the more "upmarket" dining packages at restaurants with decent food and beverages. Not to mention a family area with kids entertainment, that doesn't make parents feel like they are being left out. After the last a band or some live music entertains a well oiled crowd till around 1030, with options for the die hards to have a crack at the trots, international events and some casino games. Restaurants allow patrons to have a night cap or two till 1030 and then all in sundry can then fade into the Perth night life back into the city or the Crown complex.

Ascot then gets freed up on Saturdays for other revenue raising events, such as Wedding packages on the highly sought after Saturday. People start getting back more of their weekends on the Saturday with the local metro racing done, and for those who have a thirst for more local racing, have a revolving Saturday for the outer metro clubs to be No. 1 on a Saturday, because after all, Metro Perth is going to be bet on regardless of being on a Saturday, right?

Create the niche and make it your own. Buck the trend and take a risk. Or die a slow death. I know Ive lost substantial interest, I wonder if im alone.

I think you'ld find the holding back from it going ahead is the trainer's , last race at 8 tuck them into there stables at 9:30pm back up at 2-3am that's for a local trainer before you even start with travelling stables , I know a lot of the trainers over east are not big fans of night racing

Never thought of it from the trainer's point of view

Harness trainers have had to work to this regime forever.

RWWA may not be keen to allow thoroughbreds to compete with the trots on a Friday night.

if you are in last at Bunbury tomorrow be pushing to have it home and fed up by 8.30pm

I'm all for it - night racing, try Friday if it doesn't work out then give it a go on Saturday night - install Trakus - go the full Monty I say >:/

WA is known as wait a while for good reason. How long did it take to get free replays? Night racing would be a shot in the arm for racing in the West, as would be a midweek synthetic track, but don't hold your breath....

Gee there is some crap on this thread.

Why does anyone think a change form Saturday racing to Friday night is a goldmine?

On course income doesn`t contribute anything  to stakemoney.

No other state runs their prime meeting at night.

Income from total pare-mutuel betting is 75% from races outside WA.

RWWA income from Saturday racing is around 6% of total income.

A lot of forum members have no idea how RWWA makes money for the industry.

Leave Saturdays as they are. Midweeks are struggling though. Switch city midweeks to Friday evenings and let Bunbury/Pinjarra/Northam have the Wed/Thu meets.

Shouldn't really be competing with the trots but on the friday night? Thirsty thursday night races would put a smile on my dial. Saves me betting on feckin Vaal!

fair suck of the sos, lame, night racing in vic and nsw have no adverse comments from jocks...they are tucked up in bed by 10pm...and cop @200 bucks a ride...

most trainers have "foremen' to look after the horses so they are home watching my kitchen rules or something.

if anything It would boost it! imagine the e/s punters half cut on a Friday/Saturday night punting on our local races... would be great for turnover imo

I love going to Adelaide or Melbourne and being able to tune in and watch the quaddie legs of an ascot meeting late in the evening..

when daylight savings is on you can wake up here in WA and the first race in Melbourne be run by 8am some mornings during spring then on the flip side for the e/s punters they could still enjoy our racing later into their night

pretty sure it was only one bloke suggesting friday night.
    obviously that wouldnt work.
you want to "own" the night. friday night there are too many entertainment alternatives.
would make sense to have the night meeting on the wednesday with the aim of making it a social event like happy valley.

Will make even more sense to have night racing at Belmont interwined with the footy over the road.  Twilight meetings, late start maybe 2pm on days when the footy starts at 5.40pm - most races over by 6pm.

Gotta try it to know if it works or fails, saying it will fail, without trying it is crazy

Yes, my hand is up, I'm the one who stupidly nominated Friday night. It was only a suggestion, but clearly I am misinformed. I agree another night of the week might be better (ie align with Hong Kong). We'll never know unless the lights go in for a start though, will we.

Maybe a 6 week summer series to trial a weekday night? Just something that people who are interested in racing have something to look more forward to.

Or maybe, as usual, complain and do nothing.
