Racing and Wagering Western Australia (RWWA) today confirmed that
thoroughbred racing will be conducted on Good Friday for the first time
in 2017.
With the support of Western Australian thoroughbred racing industry
stakeholders, including the heads of its jockeys and trainers
associations, RWWA has programmed a meeting for Ascot Racecourse on
Friday 14 April, starting at approximately 1.30pm.
“AFL, rugby league and soccer matches will all be played on Good
Friday in Australia this year and it is clear from not only those events
but also our own consultation process, community attitudes to the day
have changed,” said David Hunter, Manager, Racing Commercial &
Planning, RWWA.
The Good Friday meeting at Ascot will feature the $200,000 WA Sires’
Produce Stakes, run at Group 3 level for the two‐years‐old’s.
Perth Racing Managing Director Professor John Yovich said “the
British Horseracing Authority introduced Good Friday thoroughbred racing
in 2014 and families responded to its initiative by flocking to
Lingfield Park on the outskirts of London in large numbers”.
“Perth Racing is happy to facilitate Good Friday racing and will provide free entry to patrons,” said Professor Yovich.
RWWA is consulting with Gloucester Park regarding the scheduling of
the local metropolitan harness racing event leading into the Easter
weekend.

Saturday 4 metro races 4 midweeks.
That from David Hunter on radio this morning
If the answer is yes, and I honestly don't know.....this could be a huge day for the race club. Think about it. Not everyone goes away at Easter on holidays and those that are in Perth, with nothing else to do, might be keen to head to the track for a punt knowing they can get a couple of drinks.

RWWA have decided to race on Good Friday, a public holiday. It seems strange that they have they decided to race on Good Friday but yet no longer race on other public holidays. Every other public holiday( Boxing Day, Labor Day, Anzac Day, Easter Monday, Queens Birthday) has no city race dates. It is the only state in Australia which does not race at a city metropolitan track on public holidays.
I would much rather have city racing on at least three of those public holidays, and bring it in line with other metropolitan Australian race clubs than to race on Good Friday.
In three or four years, they will probably think it is too costly to have a Good Friday meeting and shunt it off to Mt Barker like they have done on Easter Monday racing at York!

i am not a religious zealot...far from it, I am not a churchgoer, I swear, I punt, I say pharque, and occasionally use the Lords name in vain...just a normal bloke.
we read so much in the media about how our Christians principals are being eroded and that the dreaded Muslim lurks....and so it does. so please consider....
Easter is the most holy day in our calendar..the death of Christ (the basis of our Christianity) the fundamental foundation of our religion.
can we not, for 2 days of the year eliminate the Gods of sport? I think we should.

AFL and NRL (and other sports) now being played on Good Friday.
Very rare for RWWA or PR to be pioneers, so hopefully a sign of things to come.
If individuals can`t have a day off the punt, they are the problem, not racing on Good Friday.
