Thought i'd get the thread started. No real preview as I haven't had time to look closely at the form but at a glance it has to go close to the worst quality Friday night meeting on record. (And that's being positive). My last meeting before a bit of jet setting so hopefully can find a way to end the night with pockets full.
Using the 365 market.
R1: Cavalry Call a place looks nice at $8.
R2: Stunin Eyes Only the place at $9.
R3: Our Jeremes Gem EW is one of the few races I might have a decent bet.
R4: Whozideawasthis but he is far too short.
R5: Another race worth a bet. Novelties anchoring Forever Remembered and El Hombre and something EW Forever Remembered.
R6: Run One Over, if I backed them that short I think the $1.35 is a fair price.
R7: Courage Tells. Its not the right race, right draw, right run, right driver and I won't be backing him but I did like his last run.
R8: Ready For Take Off. He is a very average horse but he should be $1.50 as this is his chance to lead and there is nothing here that can run past him and he is currently $3.30

Noticed @Gilga that Whozideawasthis was quoted at $1.65 think is the horse to beat even from gate nine. Now this could also be the race for the one paced grinder Billy Mack from barrier two if can work his way to an early lead for the master tactian Shannon Suvaljko , however.....noticed he in early markets is just $2.40..surely they jest.

Weakfish field and 10/1 bar those two but a very brave punter would take $2.40 Billy Mack .

On top tip like most is Runoneover but think $1.35 is short enough it's just that bee in his bonnet that he can get. Looks the certain leader with little pressure and should win but Jimmy J was very good last week with not much luck and Tricky is more than capable.

Terrible fields light and quality and quantity. Have heard the some trainers may not have renewed their licences by the deadline for the new season. Also no 2yos and most 3yos have been tipped out.

^^Makes sense. Never seen a Gloucester Park meeting on a Friday night with so many out of form and ordinary horses vying for favouritism...gives them a chance to notch a win. Punters - good luck.

RJ Bopper went around Tuesday night unplaced at 33/1 tomorrow night early quote 4/1 :-\"

Been perusing the final race at Headquarters tomorrow night...a quick maths calculation...the first five in betting..between them from their previous 45 starts have no wins and just the three placings.

42 times unplaced out of 45 runs and there the five favourites. Shameful. ( Unless you back the winner of course! )

Thanks Cisco...never underestimate luck. Everything in life is luck. Just that sometimes the l gets replaced with a f. But a bit of good luck is worth its weight in gold.

As others have  said - what a shocking meeting - only 8 races - and 3 of them  8.5k  races

Idont know how they  do it -  but Victoria - the money  looks fantastic  - there seem to be endless   number of rich - 20-30k semi finals for 2 and 3 year old races - and then like last Sunday - they have about 6 or 7 100k to 200k finals . Maybe its like the Bathurst series where owners pay a number of nomination and acceptance fees along the way etc

Also the young squaregaiters aernt left out - not unusual for Maryborough to host 10 rich troting races on the one  card etc

Victoria looks the best reward for an owner - fluke a top horse and you hit the jackpot

    Marko,

Dont let those numbers fool you buddy - the harness game over here in Victoria is not that rosy trust me. Majority of the horses running and winning these races are trained by the bigger stables the little hobby trainers are getting swallowed up!! Have a look at most races they are either $5000 or $7500 in the country.

The smaller stables cannot get new owners because of the lack of prizemoney compared to training fees.

Training fees have gone up and prizemoney is stagnant.

    Cheers cisco

Yeah - but i tell you what - Emma Stewart wouldnt be in a hurry to leave - the grass is very lush and green for Emma over in Vic

Ive never known a trainer to continually dominate year in year out with new young horses - and i think their all locally bred ( ie -their not NZ imports i dont think - you dont have to be that clever to bring them over )

She must have breeders - or owners - who breed or buy great stock year in year out

And her horses are nearly unbeatable - take her horses on  ( like i did at Geelong Wednesday night - and i wish i hadnt of ) and you will end up penniless

The Stewart stable (and her owners) spread their wings far and wide but the one common thread is bloodlines, top of the shelf bloodlines, no matter where they are sourced from. Nostra Villa for example is WA bred, the owners have USA and Canadian broodmares, a recent winner sourced from Queensland plus NZ bred stock are not excluded either.
A very strong client base means there is a production line of classically bred stock for her to finish off which she does brilliantly.

As one that recently went down the NZ import path, let me assure you that you do have to be clever, very clever...and with deep pockets..."to bring them over"...there is an old joke about being locked in a room with a Lion, a shotgun and a ......well, you know the rest of it. They have never forgiven us for the underarm delivery. Caveat Emptor.

M Purdon.....Fly Like Eagle ....Follow The Stars......Piccadilly Princess etc etc has reversed the trend. The NZ suffix is myth in terms of a horses latent ability. It has become shorthand for.... " we have done the work  on this steed and can't earn too much here post 3 y/o given our kiwi handicapping system but have a bargain for you in Oz......at a giveaway price .....snigger" .
And that is not to mention setting back the Australian breeding industry decades.

I believe the Australian Breeding Industry has benn anything but set back by the importation of quality bloodstock from NZ....our bloodlines have been hugely improved over decades and decades by imported stallions, and more recently by quality imported broodmare stock and there is abundant evidence to support that contention.

As evidenced by the flourishing state of active stud numbers in WA ? The shortcut to the races via scooping the cream off successive generations of NZ crops by cashed up syndicates and other operators has led to a mythical status being conferred on the NZ bred horse. My info is that more under performing NZ breds of each generation meet a grisly fate because there is no commercial interest in them than we could possibly imagine. I never forget Village Kid was by a shunned NZ stallion in Gramatan and the best mare ever in WA was Daintys Daughter.

  • ChariotsonfireChariotsonfire    3,025 posts
I agree JayJay a lot of breeders stuck to breeding crap to crap for years and suffered accordingly. I do acknowledge that it was very difficult to stand a commercial stallion in WA.

The move to a mares based system gave breeding a new lease of life and is substantiated by the improvement in the Westbred juvenile classics over the last 3-5 years. You only have to look at some of results from the old Sires Stakes races to see the improvement.

HRA introduced an import fee on NZ horses and directed those funds to breeding incentives in each state so the breeding industry has been well recognised over the last decade or so.

Yes, not the thread to discuss it but when you look at a quality Westbred like for example Cott Beach, and you trace its maternal line back to a NZ imported mare Widow Bingen bred by John McKenzie in 1945, you appreciate the foresight of breeders who even back then sought to improve our bloodlines ...and that is still going on today. The import fee is almost waived for mares aged 5yo and older...as I have recently discovered when bringing an extremely well bred mare to WA for the purposes of breeding.
And I chose Cott Beach as an example deliberately as her 5th dam, the aforementioned Widow Bingen is also the dam of Dainty Widow, the dam of Dainty's Daughter. And Scott's Way, the sire of Dainty's Daughter was a NZ imported son of Noble Scott, also bred by Sir John McKenzie in 1940....so if the importers hadn't imported, there would never have been a Dainty's Daughter foaled in a dusty paddock up at Cunderdin.

Anyway, back to the racing. Dodo and Khun Ratha were the obvious 1/2, finding the 3rd placegetter was the only interest...look no further than PTT's very own place getting pin up girl Auctioneers Elsu, the gift that keeps giving....in a small filed no matter where she drew, was always going back off the gate, was laways going to get home late and was as usual,  always a very good place chance ....and so it turned out for a ridiculous $6.70 the place. Ta very much.

Sarah Suvaljko to the fore yet again - Auctioneers Elsu and Its MyLucknow all up place on tote $16.75 also Morgan Woodley placed again on another rank outsider @$22 a place.

Dodo class told in the end.Khun Ratha was very good . The Auctioneer yes the PTT pin up girl into the placings. Argyle Red going terribly four runs in all ordinary at best. Glow Bright battled away in his style and the rest good night.

In the next Charlie El is @$31 and $6 in a very weak field could do worse!

Majestic Prince , Bettor Twisted and Charlie El . The Prince might be the one at a good tote price.

At what stage does anyone announce that they have "improved the breed?" It is at any level a subjective argument conveniently rooted in hindsight. Witness full relations where one is a champion racehorse and one is a duffer.
eg San Simeon - Milson Hook. If you were to claim breed improvement with one then the other would be a millstone around the neck of the breeder for life.....yet the thought process behind both were identical.
My belief is breeding is generally a self fulfilling prophecy based on numbers and luck......not location...as a dusty paddock in Cunderdin would attest.
ps...a NZ mare I had the misfortune of being associated with was originally purchased as a broodmare and brought to Australia by an acquaintance. A member of the vaunted nz Birdie family she was an ordinary conveyance and threw everything from ultra slow slugs to half mad speedy squibs. No thanks. On face value a breed improver....in reality a breed assassin.
Thats it for me on this medusa of a topic.

Magestic Prince , Webb Ellis goodness gracious...not only did they not go a foot they didn't go an inch! Both every mortal possible hope.

Chris Voak 10/10 drive to find the pegs behind the leader just slotting in before Lewis got there and won him the race. Give your drive every possible chance and the rest looks after itself..and that's what Voak did.

If anybody in the future tries to tip you Webb Ellis or Magestic Prince ...listen carefully, nod your head , be in agreeance....then slowly turn around and run for the hills!
  • JayJayJayJay    8,624 posts
Junior was very NOT keen on Webb Ellis in the GP TV interview, suggesting it could well be on the way out the door.
Thought Our Jeromes from 1 would get his chance to win but alas not. Keep asking myself why I am bothering with this meeting...but too foul to even think of leaving the house. Le Miserable...and treading very lightly just for interest.

Billy Mack to lead in the next but Whozideawasthis to be a bit too good , Billy and my mate Yackandahdah to fill the placings... Think the Yak might run a drum.
  • Ridersonthestorm33Ridersonthestorm33    10,951 posts
Woodley driving with confidence...huge run the winner. Billy Mack very good. The favourite dissapointing. Yak every chance and sacked. Jacka Mara going well.

But Woodley is the one - the roughies he's been getting into the money - remarkable.

Dodolicious.....a westbred with its female antecedents deeply connected to the Serpentine/Byford area for generations ironically would be by far the best value for money ever spent by the Bond camp ......couldn't resist that addendum.
