Over time, if a horse has had "numerous wins and decent prizemoney" and it has a rating of under 50 or less, it has been a long, long time out of form. As well as the maiden races, they would also be excluded from any  of the 0 -1 win or1-3 win or 2-4 win races etc.

To have the out of form horse race against in form NR 65 or NR 70 horses and above, when it has been hopelessly out of form and has failed to add to its earnings for a long time is also "unfair" and would probably result in it disappearing out of the racing population.

Ratings systems, be they in harness or gallops, are designed to accommodate as many of the racing population as possible. Not perfect by any means, and as you say, a maiden is a maiden, but it is not necessarily the lowest class of horse racing based on current form.

Yep, been very well placed and enjoying a renaissance, 36 starts this season, 193 in total at an average earn of $717 per start over 5 years. 3 of his 4 wins this year have been in $6240 races...... but he can't start against an unraced horse or a  maiden unless the connections of the maiden choose to race their horse out of its classification  based on race wins, nor can he start in the 1-2 wins or 2-4 wins or whatever other iteration is programmed.  Won at least 10 of those "$L5 4K races" under HWOE with it's much more rapid drop backs against very weak and out of form horses, the aptly named "drop back on steroids" races. Still waiting for someone to come up with the perfect system. But I do get what you are saying, it is undeniable. And there are worse examples than Lets Rock Tonight.

Just had a small e/w bet the race just run at Bathurst - race 7 - horse 9 Love Watch at $51 with the win boost

Little known trainer driver has the horse , it was an excellent run the start prior , in slick closing sectionals , and all you can say tonight in a decent field it should have won easily , finished 4th , motored to the line , after baulking and getting skittled  when 2 pacers which just had to break gate  on the 1st turn

There will be no 50-1 next start , thank goodness i didnt have 100 e/w on it tonight because you would be deadset crying

Update on Lets Rock Tonight,Now 20 wins after winning at Kella Sunday but strangely still a has a NR of 48 thought if you won a race worth between $4501 and $6999 you would be re-handicapped  3 points .
It seems horses in races 2 and 3 have not had their points adjusted according to their finishing positions
    Am I missing something,

Arapaho, maybe if a horse has an unfulfilled engagement, the NR wont/can't reset till the race has been run? Just a thought.
  • ArapahoArapaho    394 posts
No mate, Hes thunder winner of race 2 was only just updated 3 points, and the horses that finished 6th or worse  from races 2, Major Buzz ,Sports Central,Cracka Tinny, Mr Riggers and race 3 Bold Jackie,Adda Paris and Hot Cinder all have just now received their 1 point reduction and none of them had unfulfilled engagements

What I wasn't aware of, was that the Beat the Handicapper Rule? ,was still in operation, otherwise Lets Rock Tonight  would not of been able to start Tuesday as the race was restricted to horses up to a NR of 50.
  • JayJayJayJay    8,623 posts
Yep, I don't what is happening with updating but when you posted that Lets Rock Tonight hadn't been penalised and was till a 48, I had a look to see if it was a non penalty race like some of the concession races have been, or what ever, and I did a Harness Web search and he was 51, that's all. I am not trying to defend anything. It must have been updated in between you posting and me looking.

It was my understanding that HWOE adjustments were real time, LTE, dollars last 5, level and so on...and I thought NR would be the same but obviously not.

I went looking at the policies and it is the field selection points, not NR, that are not automatically updated if the horse has an unfulfilled engagement

Goldfields lost a legend on all fronts yesterday. Micheal O'Shaughnessy-- was known as The Fox   & Micko.---He was held in the highest regard at Midland  Guildford Cricket Club. Spud Slater  said the fox would have played State Cricket bar serious knee injury suffered in car accident.

Through that connection Greg Bond went to Kalgoorlie-----.Micko  helped him with Accommodation. Very good player Greg Bond

The club was Great Boulder Cricket  Club (TWO BLUES).  Which were the colours that Greg Bond used for years- Later Greg named a pacer  Fox  O'Shaughnessy.

    RIP  Micko

And well named, Fox was a very handy horse. Ended up being a 1.53 horse in the states, won piles of races, both here and over there. One that I recall Bondy drove a lot.

Another very decent cricketer, champion footballer and quality human got "run out" over night on 84. Derek Chadwick, 269 games for the Royals, not one of them below his lofty standards. 4000 first grade runs.

Saw him open with Olly Milburn at the WACA one day. Olly got about 200, before tea, one into the MTT Bus Depot, a couple into  Queens Gardens and a few more down Nelson Crescent and Chaddy happy to hold up the other end with a quiet 50, farming the strike to the phenomenon that was Colin Milburn. Always a gentleman, always humble, should have had one if not two Sandover Medals. A legend of the human race.

Chaddy was my Phys Ed teacher at Governor Stirling and later played against him in a Swan Districts/East Perth game.

A great little innovation last Friday which produced great viewing was when they mic;d Aiden De campo up, before, during and after race 4 on Gatecrasher.
It provided excellent viewing and gives those that have never  driven in a race a bit of insight into what occurs out on the track.
Couldn't of picked a better reinsman in regards to their confidence, cheekiness, a all round good bloke and a pretty good yapper too.
Can be viewed on Australian Harness site in News section Aiden De Campo Mic'd Up .

    Well worth a look.

It was excellent wasn't it, a great insight and a straight assessment on the spot. It would be good to see some others, "beep" button at the ready but not needed.

Running the WA Pacing Derby in it's current time slot ensures that it gets zero publicity up against the Melbourne Cup and the Golden Eagle. It is a very good field, full of multiple chances, even with the non starting Eastern States Invaders (who lets face it were never going to start flying in on the morning of the race and were unsurprisingly scratched early this morning) Try telling Racing WA that as they are still running a story promoting their participation. But none the less, if they all drive fair dinkum, a potentially terrific race.

On a broader sense, I would be keen for someone to present a single positive outcome that has emerged from shifting the "birthday" of standardbreds from the original August 1st to then September 1st, and now to January 1st.

The Sports editors demand their racing writers meet public expectations around the Caulfield Cup, the Melbourne Cup, The Everest etc and harness racing simply doesn't get a look in opposed to these big ticket events. Surely it can be rescheduled.

Markos much vaunted Broken Hill trotting association looks to be stuffed (google Broken Hill harness racing club in dire straits) after the decion was made to only grant them 2 meetings.

Its almost like no matter what those working on and for the club have little to no control over their own future regarless of how much effort they put in.....

Sounds like a similar point that was made about a local club that fell of def ears.

Didnt know where to post this with the passing of Graham Richardson

But my dear mother was a Labour Party nutter

Anyhow  she owned a nice big house on a big block in a small country  town , and it had a grass verge , and her house was in the middle of the street not on corner - but there was a public telephone box on her front verge , it had probably been their many years , but there was a bit of racket and noise as a result at night

When G Richardson was Telecommunications minister or whatever  my mother wrote to him , and said look ive voted Labour all my life , and id love to see the removal of that public phone box , 2 weeks later it was gone , true story that

Nice enough fellow Michael, good luck to him.
Quite tall for a reinsman but I suppose theres been a few .
Some of our junior drivers here in WA wouldn't be out of place on the basketball court.

Stumbled accross this article -- but this what you call industry changing increases - this article is from july 24 - and it only resulted in the sale of TAB or some deal

Now i know Jay Jay has repeatably posted that harness racing doesnt own GP - however he did let the cat out of the bag once  saying if GP is sold then it is up to the Ministers discretion where the sale proceeds go , well it is a 1000% certainty they will go to Trotting , he isnt going to give it to the Greyhounds or the Salvation Army for goodness sakes

So looking at what NZ have done , and you look at the NSW  situation before they sold HP they were that broke , Steve Turnbull went  to a Geelong midweek meeting and drove a treble , and he was seriously considering selling up at Bathurst and moving to Victoria

So WA Trotting , currently in crisis position with the pressure finally  coming from the gallops industry re the terribly unfair allocation of funds re in relation to turnover - they should get the valuers in and sell GP lock stock and barrel , and the windfall from that current white elephant dump will go back to Trotting

No, JayJay didn't say that at all, nothing of the sort. If the members decided to sell GP "lock, stock and barrel", the distribution of the funds is up to the members.

Having sold the venue, members may then decide to build a new track or give the money to another existing track or club or buy a large cruise ship and go around the world. It would be up to them. There would be no requirement for them to spend the money on Harness Racing.

It would take Ministerial Intervention, I don't know, resumption powers or rezoning or whatever, to resume the land prior to the sale for the government to have the option of redirecting sale proceeds to harness.

In order to sell, 2/3 of the membership must vote in a referendum (around 200 members on latest figures) and there must be at least 50% (around 100 members) in favour of selling, of those who voted.

If the members then decided to dissolve the Association, the Bylaws state that the Supreme Court would decide on the allocation of the funds.
